Ruth Kelly, Minister for Women, stepped up efforts to reduce the gender pay gap today by awarding nearly half a million pounds to a range of organisations to create more quality part time jobs at senior level.
Visiting a Royal Mail sorting office, Kelly met mail workers who will benefit from one of the schemes awarded funding from a new Quality Part Time Work Fund.
£25,000, match-funded by Royal Mail, will be used to develop job-share and part-time managerial posts on two sites in London.
Royal Mail intend to make 10% of management jobs on these sites part-time within 18 months.
They then aim to roll this out across the business.
Not sure whether this is just a woman thing, strange anyways,i mean part time Managers :Confused

Ruth Kelly, Minister for Women wrote:As things stand, working part-time is concentrated in low-paid jobs
Have i got this right, miss Kelly works for the government, who own us,who are trying their best to replace full timers with part timers and are now only employing part timers.
Ps Good points Rocky/Tommo.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

widening access to the labour market
I think the argument is along the lines of accessing a wider labour market. RM's current policy and work times make it hard to employ some part sof the labour market. This restricts the quantity and quality of potential workers out there at all levels/skill sets.
They mention 10% in 18 months so this is not a transformational thing, but I expect it will help with recruitment into areas where they are finding it difficult at the moment.
My own personal experience of this isn't always great and requires good team working between these people and being well managed.
This relates to an earlier rant by me on people possibly coming in and prepping walks/sorting as a part-time role. This was met with some opposition as prepping a walk is a very personal thing that the postie should have absolute control over. If there were mistakes then accountability could be an issue.
Royal Mail have been attempting for some time to create 'hot houses.' A hot house should be somewhere you can trial ideas before possibly rolling them out. I think this is something the union should encourage as this may help avert national roll-out disasters.
Curoius to know what you think as it sounds like they want to take this approach with this idea

Walk sequenceing machines
At our branch A.G.M. it was mentioned about the trials at Stratford D.O. concerning walk sequenceing machines. At the moment they are takeing 30 mins prep out of the main office and about 20 mins out of the 6 cluster offices
Very worrying indeed as they are not at full pelt yet and will get better
I hate to think what it will mean to us when they are at maxium speed
