A collegue of mine has recently suffered a berevment in his family.The dom called at his house,left a vile message on his answerphone threatening him with dicsaplinary action.As you can imagine this caused great distress to his family.THIS IS DISGRACEFUL & UNNACCEPTABLE.I would have lamped him one because he is a B*****D.

How low can some of these Managers stoop? Hopefully, he has kept the recording of the managers message, and
use it against him.

Shameful. Hopefully the anserphone mesage was kept. And some action is taken against the Manager (and I use that term loosely)

Hopefully, your colleague will make a formal complaint against the manager. I can't believe how low some of them will go!

Whilst being utterly disgraceful, unnacceptable and contemptible it happens to this day within Royal Mail and managers of this ilk should be weeded out and given the boot. They seem to thrive on picking on the weak employee or on an employee who has just lost a member of their family. Their individual actions are beyond contempt and bring the company into disrepute. Understandable that his family were greatly distressed IMHO they should have went straight to the police. I know of one colleague in my DO on the day of his father's church funeral service was instructed by the then DOM to "Keep your mobile switched on".

I do hope that the message is still on their answer phone as it should be used for evidence via the CWU bullying and harassment helpline. Has there been any formal complaint made by the colleague?

Hawd the bus - we don't need to know exactly what was said imho - just the fact that there was a bereavement, the manager knew, yet they felt that the disciplinary matter overrode all other considerations.

IMHO it does not matter what the discipline matter was, whether it was 1 letter left in the frame, or a pile of mail found somewhere, a disciplinary matter should wait till the postie is back at work.

If the matter is more important than day to day work then details should be passed to the IB or relevant authority and the manager should let the professionals get on with it.

However reading between the lines it seems as though a manager has overreacted to someone taking time off work without permission because of a family death and again that could wait till they return, or perhaps be handled more compassionately than leaving a message on an answer phone.

seen that happen - someone's husband had died , there was a line saying Grief Reaction , fortunately she was left alone by a then relatively benign management , later we had all this macho stuff to soften staff up and knock the stuffing out of them for privatisation .

Many of these jumped up idiots have never left the playground - i.e . " They're all professional mourners , as little as possible for as much as possible " . These ignorant & ill-informed idiots commentating on RM matters don't realise that the CWU is absolutely necessary going by the standard of " management " , no people skills whatsoever which means more them and us .

that's backward 90's style management - i.e. The Contract is King , " You are our property " , Resources Management - is a " intellectualised " version of Macho 50's or 80's - basically it's about showing " commitment " by willingly working OT and reporting everything that " awful " union are " up to " .

The irony is that the DUMwit would probably get Brownie Points for being " robust " given RM's " The Emperor's News Clothes " :cfo style and it's p*** poor middle management and " lacking expertise " Senior Management . :mfo :lfo
