Hi there,
Ive just started 3 weeks as a postie and im struggling badly as im well over my contract hours on the walk,im told by the manager that all the runs are timed so ive no choice but to complete it.is this true ? im about 3 hours over my time and i wont be getting any extra money for completing walk.

no manager can make you work over your contracted hours. if you do its your choice and its illegal not to pay you for any hours you have worked

Are you in the union? If so speak you local rep as your manager is talking poop. Might be an idea asking around and see how long it took other posties to do the round before you came along. Management rely on the fact that new people aren't confident of the rules and are easily manipulated. I bet you find others struggled with it too. Hack and slash has meant many a round has been pumped up to an unreasonable level and yours sounds like one of them. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORK OVER YOUR CONTRACTED HOURS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES so cut off and tell them to stick it up thier asssss! (diplomatically of course! )

What are your contracted hours ??? and what the hell happened to being paid extra (overtime) for training...God I so hate this firm !!!!!! and its getting worse if thats possible

when i started i came in on my timke of 0945 and i noticed straight away the postman on my walk had already started tieing up etc .im meant to finish at 1415 but ive no chance as when i was out training me and the other postman were doing bits of certain street together so i thought to myself how the heck is 1 man meant to do this on time.... our union rep at our office has been off since i started so ive never seen him but hes due back on wednesday so i join either then or asp if the union return my call i made yesterday..thanks for thje advice it makes me feel more correct..cheers.

The first few weeks are very definately the worst, and allowance should be made for you being new to it.

The first few weeks are very definately the worst, and allowance should be made for you being new to it.

The manager should have a training budget part of which will be, or should be used to cover new staff claiming docket when going over in their first few weeks.

Took me about 2 months to get finished on time. As people have said first few weeks are the worst, you think your slow and your head drops because you think your useless. Then one day all of a sudden it all clicks and you wonder what you were worrying about.

Stick with it Mr Benn (an ex PMG ) it does get better

I've just started 2 weeks ago and completed my third full round as of today. Today, saturday, was a light round and I finished on time, but Thursday and Friday I was 1/2 an hour over and that doesn't include part of this office's lapsed rounds that I will have to do in future, so I estimate up to an hour over every day (on Monday the machine sort?? from today has to go out, too). Luckily the manager and his assistant are being reasoneable and paying the extra while I settle in. If they didn't, then I don't think I'd be staying. Having said that I find it difficult to see how I'm going to do this a whole hour faster. Time will tell

On another note the job (part time) was advertised as hours between 10am and 3.30pm (5 day week, 24hours) Straight away this was a problem start time, because the vans would have left and my round not pouched. So I was asked to start at 9am. The advertised hours were what attracted me to the job (home situation) although starting at 9 isn't a problem, but management! (it's no surprise to me. I worked for BT for 30 years )

By the way postmangeneral, I would be 3 hours over if I didn't have a bicycle. The day I'm expected to walk the whole round, I'm off. Ask, no, tell your manager there has to be some give on his part, or he can expect a very high turnover of new starters.

thanks for the replys backing me i seem to have a lot more confidence now that the manager told me false information,i feel alot better now and i speak to the union manm on wed hopefully and keep you all posted of situation...thanks again.

There is a very nasty rumour going round that RM have posties who are 'coaches' and are paid the handsome sum of £30.00 a week 'extra' to train and keep an eye on the new starters.
Apparently RM got an award for the way they train their staff as well.

But like i said,it's a bit of a nasty rumour.

We had a training guy in our office and was paid £30 to train them he done this for 3yrs till he retired 2 months back and of yet RM have not readvertised it thought it has been bought up in WTL

Our Dom was also asked what he has been doing with the money he has saved in not paying this sum out

as i have posted before,our trainer couldnt even complete his duty on time and used his own car
over £120 a month for doing feck all

The only time I see our office trainer is when he has to do his walk which is very rare now. Don't know where he disappears to but its not in our office. I think the extra 30 quid a week he gets is going on doughnuts judging by his waistline now.
