leaving parcels by door

Post by johnsouthwales »

well i never.. i ordered a computer programme from amazon last wednesday. on thursday i checked something and it said it hadn't been processed. thought to myself dam, i wouldn't have minded it for saturday. on friday it said it's being processed and will be delivered may 12th (today)..

on monday i was going to go somewhere as i knew it was being delivered on wednesday and gave me the chance to go where i wanted to go. some talk talk envelpoe had been pushed through the letterbox i heard that..

whilst making a cuppa in the kitchen, something caught the corner of my eye through the glass... yes, you guessed it.. thank feck i hadn't gone out early and away for most of the day as i originally planned. computer disc, wind, rain, condensation, moisture, as it would have been outside unattended all day as i wouldn't have got back until 7pm

i didn't hear a knock on the door, nor a card. the postie left it balanced on the door window ledge and inbetween the door handle.

what you think?
and here comes avi cohen! oh i say! at the same end, he's got one back!!

On the one hand the postie was wrong to leave it at your door. It should never be left in the open and exposed to the elements. In fact RM are rolling out new guidelines that tell us it should NOT be left anywhere apart from a neighbour from now on, even if the recipient is happy for it to be left in a shed.

On the other hand it is perfect plausible that he knocked and you were running water, out the back for a moment, flushing the loo, boiling the kettle or some other thing that made you unaware that the postman had knocked. He then left it in the hope that you would receive it today rather than leave a card for you to call for it from the DO at a later stage.

It was wrong to do what he/she did but they did it with the best of intentions and that was for you to receive it today.

I would never leave it at by the door but until I received the new guidelines, I would have been happy to leave it in a shed or a greenhouse but no more. RM are tightening up their mail integrity and even though they know that a lot of posties will continue as before it now leaves any postie who doesnt follow the rules up for the sack if or when it goes wrong.

oh i don't know. maybe he used the letter box flap as a knock at the same time he was pushing the letter through the front.. if that was a knock, wasn't much of a knock cos i heard the letter being pushed through the front door. and if it was one tap of the letter box flap, one would think it was a letter being pushed through. the old posties knocked on the glass.. then again, i won't be suprised if h&s put a stop to then in the event of causing an injury to knuckles or even piercing a glass pane.

and the package was outside the back door.

originally, the amazon delivery date was may 12th. but it was delivered on monday

the point was if i had left early which would have been well before the postie arrived. it would have been after 7pm i would have returned and noticed it.. if i had noticed it at all as i would have entered through the front door.. (providing it was still there and nobody had swiped it).. it was by luck i had changed my plans and worked in my favour.

but it does not work in everyone's favour.

the whole point of a delivery system is the safe and secure transit and delivery of mail.

leaving it in the open is not safe or secure.

like the other posts from previous, such as a note 'you'r parcel is in the wheelie bin' which was collected and emptied by the refuse..

If I leave something somewhere (out of sight and undercover) then I leave a P739 advising them of the "safeplace" I've left it in.

And I always knock hard, TWICE and then start filling out the P739 telling them to come and collect it so they can't say they didn't have enough time and didn't hear me knock. I'm sure when I was doing my training etc there was something saying we should be allowing 2 mins at the doorstep or something... Do we have time now?!

If you sign Recorded Deliveries be prepared to lose your job the day someone complains.
The customer is the person who has paid for the RD and needs a guarantee that it has been recieved. They don't pay extra to see your signature (or do you forge your customer's).
I know a lot of my customers very well but I wouldn't trust them with my job.
And I find it a bit bizarre that in one thread you complain about the IB and your DOM hassling you, then in another you give them the ammunition to do you big time.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I agree with CCR it's the quickest and easiest way out of a job. :wave
It will be interesting to see if all this changes with this new agreement.
There are two reasons for this practice and don't give me the bull about doing your customer a favour. :chuckle ;liar

1.To save time and this shouldn't be a factor in the future if you have to work your hours and finish at the D.O.
2.To save carrying the thing around your walk and that also shouldn't be a factor if you have a van or HCT.

So will it change........ :whistle

Theres a chance one of your customers finds your 739 after coming back from a fortnight away,is'nt there? I think if your in the job long enough and you do this thought of thing, the odds are your gonna come unstuck (and maybe lose your job) is it worth it?
