I read these comments below on a newspaper forum where everyone was discussing the current Brown/Cameron/Clegg shenanigans, but there was a ring of truth to them regarding employer - union negotiations...i wonder if any of this stuff went on in the RM-CWU saga ?
As i say, i didnt write them, and claiming no credit for them, but interestiing nonetheless...
What you lot reckon ?
'm a trained negotiator and part of the process after the small team of negotiators have privately reached an agreement, is to then posture in public to get all of the people they represent to agree as well. In this example, Nick Clegg can't look like he's a walkover to the left of his party. His negotiators probably privately agreed with the Tory negotiators, "Look guys, we need to look like we've been tough. We're going to spend a couple of days showing to our party that we've rejected you and are talking to Labour. Then we'll come back to you and our party will think we've been strong"
Trade unions and business negotiators do this all the time. The TU rep will warn his counterpart that he needs to go on the news and insult management etc. to get the members to back the deal.

Deceptive, dishonest, yes, par for the course in modern Britain, I'd say.

It's not really dishonest - it is just the victory of style over substance.DirtyHarry wrote:Deceptive, dishonest, yes, par for the course in modern Britain, I'd say.
Unfortunately for the example given Nick Clegg can't just override his colleagues wishes, unlike Cameron.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

No....it's dishonest.
If it is designed to portray a false reality it's.......dishonest.
And dishonesty has no style.

No - getting the posturing right took months, the deal was already signed sealed and delivered with the interim agreement.Steviea34 wrote:BLOODY HELL - THE CWU MUST BE AS HARD AS NAILS - IT TOOK MONTHS TO GET OUR AGREEMENTsavo wrote:I read these comments below on a newspaper forum where everyone was discussing the current Brown/Cameron/Clegg shenanigans, but there was a ring of truth to them regarding employer - union negotiations...i wonder if any of this stuff went on in the RM-CWU saga ?

Why can they get away with it? Because the whole of Britain is now a fractured community. Men do not stand tall together, there are no community spirits. so therefore they know that there will never be a large swelling or reaction by a united workforce. In years gone by there were working mens clubs where people met and there was a bond between men. Who is running the unions and getting the benefits, not the members. Until the plight of the working man reaches rock bottom and there is a will in this country to change things nationally (ie a workers revolt) the vultures of society will continue to have their way and pick every strand of meat off the bone, until there is no more left.

Re: employer-union horsetrading ?
The worst of the trading was giving mail centre workers and others assurances of job security if they backed this deal.
thats a big carrot incentive or stick to beat them with depending how you see it..
mail centre workers then helped to ratify our crap d2d agreement .
i realize ironically that i in turn had a say on their futures which didn't impact me.reciprocally democratic or undemocratic !
its a weakness that works to the advantage
of the bureaucrats. centre closures are going to happen anyways .
The next agreement might have jam for deliveries and crap for say distribution! divided we fall.
