duty swap

I am currently doing an early processing duty attendence 0500-1300 recently i was asked by my shift manager as i had shown an interest in doing night shift if i would consider doing a distribution driving duty.This was a rotational duty of 2 weeks of nights and one of backturn driving a 7.5 ton wagon.The reason for me being asked is because the person doing the duty is no longer able to do it due to medical grounds.I said i was interested and would do it on a trial temporary basis.The following week my shift manager came back with the branch union rep and told me objections had been raised by the distribution rep because somebody else in the section wanted the rotation.Surely as this would be just a swap agreed by both partys this should not have happened if anybody could give advice or documents of proof i would appreciate it.This would mean the distribution man would have a job in processing by the way of the swap.

If theres two of you that want the post regardless of whether its a swap, as its been raised as a point of concern the fairest way of allocating this duty would be by seniority.

This is how it would be done in my office, seniority rules and if anyone tells you other wise my friend they are telling fibs.

The Pay and Modernisation Agreement 2007/2009,covers this .Basically,it's down to your manager to agree a swap,providing there is no extra cost to Royal Mail.Seniority does not come into it,and as the person who is unable to do the driving duty due to medical reasons,if they are classed as DDA then Royal Mail has a legal duty to try to find them acceptabe work.In this case they can by swapping duties,as i said before seniority does not play a role in this,

Roger agree with the majority of your post apart from the seniority bit.

I am aware of what it states in the P/M but as its been raised as a point of concern by another member of staff seniority has to the fairest way forward.

If it can not be resolved this way then you will get to a point were the duty will have to be advertised .This will then show that no favouritism has been shown to any one person.

You can not have a situation were posties chose who can have there duty if they are no longer able to do it.

why are they not using a reserve, there should be one shouldn't there?

IMO if the person cannot do their duty for the reason stated then they go where there is a vacancy in the office until a resign or their medical status reverts to its previous position.
