Why BA union - UNITE -can fight for its members and not break under pressure of BA board ????

While CWU sold us out and nothing is happening????

Sombody on this site should write petition to CWU and politely asked them to step down.

We all can also refuse to vote in upcoming CWU internal election campaign in protest to their lack of support regarding issues were most important for us last year.

What u guys think about that?

didnt unite offer BA 3.4% pay cut and a pay freeze for 2 years - im sure that would of gone down perfectly with all of you

Whilst readily accepting that some have poured scorn on the CWU as is their right there are however benefits of being in the CWU or indeed becoming a member of it.

I agree as well. OK the CWU is not perfect and it will not make every member happy, but its all we have fighting our corner. TBH we lost the vote, although some question the mandate, it was a democratic vote and those bothering to put their views forward the Yes won. We have to accept that and move on.

There are 3 elephants in the room and the CWU need to tackle them now.

Unite should be applauded for their action. But lets get one thing straight they are offering a pay cut in return for keeping jobs particularly on the long haul flights.

Equally BA workers at Heathrow have the best terms and condtions better than any of the other airports where BA fly from.

You have to remember also that those in charge of industrial relations are the former hardline managers of Royal Mail Tony McCarthy and James Farren.

Look the facts are this the CWU have increased guaranteed basic pay. They have also consolidated door to door payments which were declining and would be automated in time and the early shift 1 & 2 which would never have been increased and declined by 3 million last year into a permanent basic pay.

Door to Door was never guaranteed it was based on contracts recieved. Early shift payments were paid for starting at 5 or 5.30. How many of those in reciept of that money now start at that time and how many will start at those times when walk sequencing kicks in ?

Now some do lose from door to door intially estimated to be less than 1 in 5 of delivery workers , but the union and the majority of the members who voted agreed that unless door to door was put into workload then a lot of members will have more pressure to have part time duties introduced as walk sequencing will change the arrival patterns for mail into your office in a major way and therefore will reduce both ips hourage and prep hourage.

Now some are unhappy about that and have decided to leave that is your right the union is no longer a closed shop. It is a voluntary organisation. However do you really think that Royal Mail were going to introduce walk sequencing using taxpayers money via a loan and then not run them on a Saturday ?

Remember it could have been far worse. In Holland and Germany they do not have 2 waves of traffic from walk sequencing ie 60% at 6 and 40% after 8. They walk sequence the whole 100% after 0600 in the morning meaning no work gets to the delivery offices until after 10 in the morning hence the fact they have 80% part timers and 20% full timers and the full timers have only a full time job guaranteed till 2012.

Dingo,rather than continuing to try to defend the reasons behind the deal......again, i think it would be far more productive if we concentrate on the next steps..the actual implementation of 2010 and beyond.We could argue for weeks on your perception of the deal and the actual realities for members around the country but just how productive will that be?
In my opinion this union is very close to self destruction at the moment.It is very evident from the accounts report from the SDGS that not only are the finances in a mess but there are serious differences in opinion between those at the top as to which direction this union takes next.
The time for smoke and mirrors,snake oil salesmen and bullsh*t is over.The deal has been accepted and it will now be judged on it's implementation.
Not what it promised but what it now delivers.The pressure is now on those area reps,divisional reps and those at the very top to prove by actions that their words were not empty ones.

Fishtank if you examine the accounts and not what Tony has written you will notice that the union lost £18 000 in income from union subs last year as a result of people leaving the union. Hardly a massive reduction given the amount of jobs lost last year.

The real concern of the accounts is the future job losses and the problems with the CWU Headquaters pension schemes. There are 3 pension schemes the new wimbledon scheme which is not in decfcit , but the old UCW scheme has a defcits of 6 million and the ex NCU scheme has 3 million defcit. The union has a legal obligation to repay the schemes as any other employer does.

Now all of these schemes should be merged which will save the union money in terms of admin costs , save on 3 sets of trustees etc.

Now in terms of moving this agreement forward well it will be a busy week , meetings with Royal Mail nationally tomorrow and on Friday all Div reps and regional directors get together.

The problem with asking them to step down, is that there's no-one willing to replace them. What we NEED, is for someone to stand against them, next time they're up for re-election. They got back in by default last time, which is why we didn't get to show our displeasure with them, via an Election.

As for refusing to vote on in the upcoming Elections. That'll just re-inforce their positions, as their friends and supporters (yes, they do have some supporters left) WILL vote, and they'd get in with a convincing majority. What we SHOULD be doing, is voting, wherever possible, for suitable replacements. At least that's what I believe. What do you think?
