Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Our DOM deliberately makes it difficult for you to book o/t. First of all you have to tell him (or a line manager) if you are going to be over (if you don't tell, you can't book) so of course we have to guess. Next, if you do say you are going to be over you get the usual, 'Why? it's not that busy!' or 'Go a bit quicker then' or 'Such and such doesn't book when he's on that round'. Then if you are over and can find the o/t sheet (if the DOM & line managers have gone home, no sheet is left and you have to chase it up next day, assuming it's not your day off!) so, assuming you can find the sheet to book it, half the time you find that your o/t has been 'forgotten' when you get your payslip. So, then of course you chase it up and get all kinds of stories like 'oh sorry forgot, you'll get it next week' or 'he told me not to give it you because of xyz etc.'
I have been owed half an hour now for 4 weeks. I know it's only half an hour but I'm determined to get it out of principle. Every Thursday I get my payslip and it's not there. When I bring this up I'm promised it 'next week'. Yesterday when it wasn't there again, I told the DOM and he said 'Oh you and your bloody half hour!'
This is by no means about me and my half hour. This is just my latest episode in the o/t war that rages in our office every week. At a guess I would say that 25% of posties in our office get messed about every week. I know why they do it, It's because some posties get that fed up of chasing it, that they can't be bothered. 'Oh it's only half an hour/or an hour, I can't be bothered with the hassle' and that's exactly want the managers want! If they can get just a few to 'forget it' 'cos they don't want the hassle, well they're saving aren't they?
I'm very close to saying I don't want any more overtime and finish on time, bringing it back (my round is over most days).
Your comments and advice most welcome, thanks.

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
I claimed 2 mins 32 seconds a few weeks ago and it was rounded down.
Excuse was that Royal Mail dont deal in seconds and only mins.
I replied this was a lie as a proposed indoor review granted each OPG 20 seconds to deal with each redirection.
Manager walked away.
Still havent got my 32 seconds.

Mate,I'd hound them for that 32 seconds for the sheer sake of the principal!pickaname wrote:I claimed 2 mins 32 seconds a few weeks ago and it was rounded down.

To the op,booking in advance is standard practice in every DO is it not? bizarre I know, but it seems you need to be mystic meg to work at rm.Tell your DOM that,as you have worked a half hour gratis, you will be half an hour later starting and finishing as normal if it's not on your payslip.Take your rep with you when you say it though.

If you are not all that desperate for overtime, then i suggest you all do the job properly and CUT OFF! When you all start bringing mail back or leaving it in the fitting he MIGHT ,only MIGHT change his mind.....Good luck though
I married my wife for her looks, but not the one she gave me when i said i was going to be a postman.

Have had all this myself. Its starting to get really out of hand. people are scared to stand up to these bullys.
Posties blame the union and the union blame the posties.
Fact is most of us are breaking the union guidlines in some way,
be it using youre car ,not taking a break, carrying an overweight bag.etc etc
Try stopping these unsafe habbits and they hound you.
you become a trouble maker in there eyes.
ive said it before and im gonna say it again, clocking in and out is the only way we will ever stop this.
Think about it everyone for once taking ther 40mins before going out and doing it they way the union want, then down tools and cut off after 8hours.simple

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Go to you your DOM before commencing delivery tell him you will be going over (For example 1hr) do not sign for it until you return the following day.
If you work more add it on if you work less take it off do not take the piss.
It is and allways has been the norm to tell your DOM before delivery if you will be going over, its just some DOMS have slacked on this matter.
As for not paying you if you dont tell him is B/S go see your rep .

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
I've never ever told him I'm going over. I don't know if this is because I don't have to, or because he just assumes i am every day, and when I don't, it's a bonus.
We have to sign in and out every day, which is the same as clocking in and out. . ermmm... but with a pen...and no clock.

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Just inform your DOM you will be working to your time and no longer.............you are contracted to work 8 hours a day, if you aren't going to complete just tell him you don't think you'll complete, take your union rep with you if you need to, inform him you have to get back because you have childcare issues or your wife is working, he'll be begging you do O/T and making sure you get paid for it!

Go in 30 mins late tomorrow - or alternatively finish 30 mins before your finish time.

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Correct procedure is to inform D.O.M. that you cannot complete delivery to time.
when you have thrown round off ask D.O.M. which area he would like left in the fitting as you will not be able complete on time
if you want O/T then inform him that you will bunce the area he agrees to be left.
if he does not agree to this and instructs you to take all mail, inform him you will return any mail you have not delivered
when you have completed your contracted hours to the delivery office for him to deal with.
if he pushes ask for grievance form and ensure you use it. detailing times dates and instructions also inform union rep as to what you are
being expected to do over and above your hours.
If he has any sence he will treat your request to be paid any o/t incurred with all due respect
I find this especially work well on Saturday's
good luck and remain firm don;t let him bully you but if he persists then ask him for a bullying form
and use this,
These are the rules so just abide within them and let him do the worrying.

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Thanks for the advice everyone.
Same thing happened again today, no o/t form when I got back, about 10 posties still out. I can imagine the scene on Monday already.
DP3 your advice looks especialy useful and I'm going to follow it on Monday. He (the DOM) is just trying to see who he can bully out of booking and it's working with some of them! You wouldn't believe the posties in our office that don't book because they can't be bothered with the hassle. There are a few of course who have stopped booking when they shouldn't have and that's fair enough, that's what these managers are after I think but they are penalising us genuine ones at the same time and (and this is my issue) they know it and don't care a toss.
Is it true, does anyone know, that they get their bonus increased if they make dramatic cuts in o/t?

I def think that the more they save by any means possible, they then get a bigger bonus. What RM managers are doing is illegal and this happens all round the country in alot of offices.curryisforlife wrote:Thanks for the advice everyone.

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
it seems this is happening everywhere,i don't do overtime anymore for this reason,a couple of months back same thing happened over 30 mins o/t,didn't get paid so returned 30 mins early without telling him,got threatened with conduct code so told him i was going to put a greivance in against him as its illegal not to pay you hours worked,lo and behold backtracked and 30 mins o/t in following weeks pay packet,IMHO only do o/t when it really suits you, love it when they are in the s**t and they start pleading with you to do o/t,sorry gaffer couldn't possibly do o/t today, while grinning like a cheshire cat, really pisses them off!!!

Re: Advice on how to handle DOM not paying overtime
Totally agree with all these posts...Its really getting me down to the point I may go sick with stress..its really affecting my home life..Im actually owed over 15 hours overtime ( over a 3 week period) and its going up every day..would be alot more if I included breaks ..pouching off etc etc..was promised what was owed last week but only got paid 2 !!! cant tell you how unhappy I am..I hate these lazy lying Doms..but like others on here im too scared to rock the boat..
