Well done Fishtank. Thank you.fishtank wrote:

But for an organisation that is committed to promoting social justice the apparent lack of female reps would appear to be nothing short of a scandal.
While I recognise the the industry is largely staffed by men, women appear to be grossly under-represented.
Personally I have no plans to pursue this option at the moment as my current unit rep is doing an admirable job in very difficult circumstances (and a much better job than I would do initially) and anyway I do have my "coiffure" to consider.

Re: Female Reps
It would seem that women are under-represented throughout most of UK industry and that is very strange considering the Office for National Statistics states..motherhubbard wrote:Well done Fishtank. Thank you.fishtank wrote:

About the only place female reps outnumber males is in Healthcare.Females were generally more likely to be union members than male employees and this relationship holds whether by age, in the public sector, workplace size, job or other individual characteristics. The only exceptions were in the younger ages (16 to 24 age band ), home workers, lower qualified (GCE A level or equivalent and below)employees.
By occupation, females had higher union densities than males in 2009 in all groups except administrative & secretarial, skilled trades, operatives and elementary occupations.
My mum was a nurse and a rep.

Re: Female Reps
I was Legal and Medical rep for the first part of the 90.s along with being a comittee member, then mid 90.s too almost 2000
I was the DO Rep which included the lateshift driving duties,
Unfortunatly My personal life took a bashing and now have son to bring up on my own,so not active anymore also moved to a different area, but I come on here and report back to union rep and take anything in and put up on the board.
I was also succesful in getting the poll cards paid to us, so I am a little active behind the scenes.
I also voted no as I cannot see RM changing there tune

Re: Female Reps
Females have got a great place in the pantheon of union history.
As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for -- but we fight for roses, too!
As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler -- ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

Bread and Roses was the name of a women's co-operative wholefood shop in Islington back in the 80's.

Re: Female Reps
On an early July afternoon in 1888 a crowd of 200, mainly teenaged girls, arrived outside a newspaper office in Bouverie Street, off Fleet Street in the City of London. They had left their work at the Bryant and May match factory at Bow in the East End in protest when three of their colleagues had been fired. Management had accused them of telling lies about their working conditions to a radical journalist, Annie Besant.Spartacus wrote:Females have got a great place in the pantheon of union history.

even back then the press was against workers protests:
The Times (June, 1888)
The pity is that the matchgirls have not been suffered to take their own course but have been egged on to strike by irresponsible advisers. No effort has been spared by those pests of the modern industrialized world to bring this quarrel to a head.
