TNT, casuals etc.

Just wondering what's being done to get casuals and workers in other mail delivery companies on board with things?

RM refer to the competition a lot - pointing out that their lower wages make them more competitive etc. etc.

Like Steven said here - if they were also fighting for higher wages and better terms of service, it'd help to at least slow down the race to the bottom that management are pushing through.

People like DOM will always try to make workers at the other companies into the enemy (same as agency workers). Although it's hard, the way to combat this is to have both RM employees and those from agencies and competitors working together against all the management, rather than letting them divide and rule.

Are there many offices where casual workers have joined the picket lines?

Anyone got contacts with workers at TNT etc.?

Does the CWU have any membership in those places? Is it trying to recruit in them?

The CWU have been trying to to get business post workers in the union,but were thrown off one of their premises.

The idea being,get them into the union,get a voice,drive their t@c up so we're on a level playing field so dum and dumber
or who ever can't use the old 'overpayed' shite.

I would of thought they would be trying them all but i'm presuming it's hard work.
The firms are putting blocks on it,for obvious reasons!

But i do think they need to push this on as everyone benefits in the end.

We're all going through the same s**t,i've asked on a couple of Dutch sites but nothing

As for our UK colleagues(sort of

) yeah could be interesting,but do you think they're bothered about what's going on?

I think trying to bring casuals at Royal Mail depots in is incredibly important - if they're trying to get better pay/conditions and joining strikes instead of scabbing then it takes a massive amount of leverage from Royal Mail. I've seen some posts on here complaining about them not being able to speak English or whatever - that's the wrong way to look at it - should be getting leaflets translated into Polish and other languages instead.

For example - this leaflet which was distributed at a strike at the Skoda factory in the Czech republic (a friend worked there for six months), was translated into at least a couple of languages (2,000 out of 29,000 workers there are Polish).

As for TNT and co. - well I'm sure the people working for them on shitty pay and contracts, and probably completely unorganised, are a bit envious of RM pay and conditions - which have been fought for and defended from decades of militancy. It's worth a shot trying to convince them that the way to improve theirs isn't to allow themselves to be part of the process of dragging yours down, but to sort themselves out. As well as CWU efforts, I reckon that means direct contact (sort of ;) ) via sites like this, maybe leafletting their depots etc.

They may not be at all interested, but even a slight increase in militancy at those firms could change the stakes quite significantly.
