Off sick after operation. Manager calls

I ve had a minor op on my leg and have been given a sick note , which stated 4 weeks off due to operation. It didnt say 2 weeks off, then 2 weeks light duties etc etc, even though these new sick notes have the option.

So im laid up feet up, you know and the phone rings

Its my Line manager, how am I blah blah

He then asks me if I can come back to work early , on light duties etc

I was kinda shocked and mumbled out er I dunno can you call me at the end of the week

So here I am 2 weeks into my 4 weeks of sick and he wants me to come back a week early

You know what managers are like, oh just come and do 3-4 hours a day blah blah, its my job to get you back to work, then we wont have to deal with ATOS.

tbh id rather they did deal with atos as im due another op on the other leg in 6 months or so

What shall I tell him when he calls me at the end of the week? f**k off? Personally I think he's taking the piss.

Im already on a stage 1 due to absence a couple of months ago when this problem flared up,i returned to work on modified duties under advice from atos ive been waiting for my op until now, and im due another op and mri scans soon. Ive also asked about how these absences will affect my stage warnings, as they are all related. And to be honest I dont trust RM or my managers as far as I can throw them.

Use it as a bargaining tool.........if I come back I don't expect to be put on a Stage 2.........yeah or no?

See what he says......I'm sure you can go back on light duties if you're honest with yourself, save yourself a stage 2 by meeting them halfway!

If you have a dr's not signing you off for 4 weeks then they can't force you back. I am not sure about this but I think if you go back to work before your dr's not says then you're not coverd under work insurance but don't quote me on that. Your Dr signed you off for 4 weeks because he's medically trained your line manager isn't. Dont let him force you into going back until you feel you're fit.

Take the stage 2 and stay off for 8 weeks,A guy in our office was asked to do exactly the same as you,He ended up delivering mail within 3 days and made his injury worse,Recieved a warning when he went back then another one because he had to go off sick again,Stay off and get fully fit,Dont do the tossers any favours atall,They dont give a toss about you,so why should you about them?

Know how you feel mandelsons_toenail.
I had to have a hip op. Not quite a replacement but near enough and a big operation. I was told I would need at least 3 months off. Had a call 7 weeks after the op, with our Dom asking when would I be back? He said they could send a van to pick me up and maybe I could sit at a desk for a few hours! Yes.....of course they care. ( I didn't agree by the way)

Im just gonna say no, the doc said 4 weeks off. not 3 with a week of light duties. call atos.

my other leg is flaring up as we speak. Im only in my early 30s. This job has f****d me

If you were to go back during the four weeks, you'd need another note from your doc to say that you're fit for work. You DOM should (does) know this.

You DO NOT go back!!!! Your Doctors note says 4 weeks off. The new fit note that has come in allows doctors to gauge how fit you are to go back on any basis whether it is light duties or not. Your note does not mention anything about light duties so you stay off. If they try to put further pressure on you to return before your note runs out then ask for it to be put in writing and signed by your manager. Royal Mail can refuse to pay you if you do something to further injure yourself whilst off or IF you ignore your doctors recommendation.

I was in a similar situation last year, 4 weeks into a 6 week absence. Boss took me by surprise a bit so I stalled till the end of the week.

When he rang back I told him that after consulting my doctor, he advised I shouldnt do any work till the end of my 6 week signing off. Didnt call back after that.

Dunno about you, but a promise from a DOM that he wouldn't issue the Stage 2 is about as worthless as Gordon Brown's apology to the woman he called a 'bigot' today. Could you trust the DOM to keep a verbal promise that he could deny ever making ??

Too late. Once the original poster exceeded 10 days off, he triggerred a Stage 2. So as he's crossed the trigger point, there's no sense in going back until he's no longer covered by the doctor's note. And, as others have pointed out, the DIM is out of order, trying to over-ride a trained medical expert
