Knowing this isnt gonna be a popular post, ive been pondering hard about the agreement thats just been passed, and for me, its a decent deal.
But if i was a walking postman, whilst i can see where it seems tough, i do think the agreement is fairer on many levels.
I was a walker for 14 years. Recently went over to nightshifts as a CSS operator, within a delivery office.
The postmans main grief is the D2D payment, and how its unfair that non postman will get the new £20.00 supplement.
But no one looks at it that non postman had no access to an extra £20-£30 a week, which could be made WITHIN duty time.
One thing that ive seen working in a new delivery office....during our CSS shift, when we wait for mail, we dont sit on our arses, but we throw in the sequenced mail, into the walks....thus saving postie a good 20 mins prepping. And we have to work the full 10 hour shift .... only on Saturdays can we get an early flirt.....no more than an hour....because all the posties are gone, and also enjoying an early finish. Thats not popular, but it is the truth.
And Posties are also getting an early flirt on most Mondays n Tuesdays.

What i see this deal has done, is get ALL Royal Mail workers, to work close to their time, ALL for the same money.
True, i aint havin to carry up to 6 loads of D2D ....... but then, the postie who IS carrying this amount, only needs to, WITHIN his paid 40 hours.

Now im as perplexed as many by a one hour shorter week, and more prep time being allocated, as to where delivery time is going to come from on heavier days......but thats managements problem, not ours.

D2D payments now mean I'm at least £15 a week worse off.
I'll lose my shift allowance, that's another £12 a week worse off.

If you've never been on a walk, you have no idea what it can be like sometimes.
Try spending 4 hours out in the cold rain delivering shite.
Do you have access to a toilet? Think of the poor bastards, such as myself, who only have 1 toilet on thw whole of the round.
This magical hour less a week isn't 'real' it's just BS. They'll simply take it off a quieter day.
Carrying the D2D's isn't so much of an issue. It's PREPPING them all. When, exactly, will we have time?
Saturday, the ONLY day I really get any chance to do anything, to see my mates.
I'm tired enough as it is, wihout adding MORE hours to the day.
'You' save us posties 20 mins prep a day? Congratulations. Maybe you can have a word with the muppets who work in the MC that distributes to my office. Maybe you can cut down on the 20+ trays of CRASHED MECH. The 'walksorted' trays that are actualy just missort bundles shoved in a tray with a yellow label on it.

but all the time on monday and tuesday is taken away by flexability and lapseing other rounds we gain nothing we have all been sold out union hq and div reps just saved there own arses to keep full time release...we get fooked over while they sit on there protected full time release...not so bad in big offices but smaller ones will get trampled on not so much of a union is it more like a two tier system as for saying that you went into css/mc that was your choice to give up deliverys and loose a d2d payment ...your choice..but when the axe falls on m/c's dont expect full support from delivery offices...rm have played a blinder the union was only protecting itself not the membership and rm have won by devide and conquer...the cwu will never have a strike again...billy and dave you are benadict arnolds plus thre will be plenty of m/c staff sent to cover walks and do there share of unlimeted d2d when delivery units have insuffisiant staff....wellcome to hell...shall we begin...(hellraiser)

The only 'winners' I can see here are those on under 30 hours as they will get bumped up,but by Christ they will have to work for that wage.

I start at 11.30pm on a Friday night....usually finish for 9 on a saturday morning, and then sleep thru till about 2-3pm, so same as most i guess.
My Saturdays are f**ked too.

We`re not. We finish sequencing mail by about 8 am, then we have to go and throw part time walks or overtime walks out. Then on a managers descretion can we leave....usually between 8.45-9 am

I worked in Callers for years I received NO d2d money and only half early shift allowance, which is what I still get. That is one of the worse paid jobs going but took the job knowing I would'nt get any D2D money. So if you take that job knowing you arn't entitled to those extras you accept it. Now I'm going to lose out even more doing deliveries

Yes it was my choice, cos i was fed up with spineless posties, making the job worse for us all, by running round, coming in early, and using their cars.
And i was fed up, doing the job correctly, but being pulled into the office constantly, with the oft quoted maxim from DIMS that "Mr Spineless Postie can do a bigger walk in less time without cutting off or booking docket"

So now, im happy to do a straight 40 hour week, do the job well, have a decent meal relief, and not get hassled from bosses.

As for the axe falling on Mail centres, i was rather hoping that being a CSS operator was reasonably safe, as one could hope, seeing as Royal Mail are putting all their faith in automation.

But i do stand by my mantra, that for all those posties moaning that we`re to get the £20 D2D supplement, they were less vocal that they were being paid more than operators, but still working less hours.....tho to be fair i know that the margins of hours worked, are getting tighter and tighter.

you all keep moaning about working to 3 or 4 on a saturday but we have just started working sunday afternoons since the closure of offices on a sunday night
just to get the mail to delivery offices for monday morning so stop whining and think on that other functions are NOT having an easy time of it.
