Overtime pay on days we do election material or D2D?

On Thursday, due to horrendous traffic, I did not arrive at work until 0925. I was due to start a new regime, like other part-timers, of starting at 0900 following a re-sign bedding-in period.
My contract hours are currently 1000-1430, so I claimed the prep overtime from 0920-1000.
Having got in late and my round always having 5-8 specials and 5-15 recordeds, being a big high street walk, I did not do the "deads" or put new election material in the frame to take out with me. I left to deliver my walk at 1045 and made my last special drop at 1258. However, this was only just over half way around my walk.
I returned to the depot at 1520, spending the next 30 minutes returning failed specials and recordeds; standard failed parcels; "deads"; putting this new batch of ~110 addressed and UNSEQUENCED election material into the frame. I left the building at 1550.
I was unable to fill in my overtime claim because the office was closed when I got back.

As soon as I got in today, I went straight to see my line manager about sorting out my claim for overtime from the day before.
The manager of my line manager chirped into our conversation, asking me why I am claiming overtime for that final 30 minute period.
He then came out with the following statement: If a postie goes onto his/her round having dealt with either election material or door 2 door, even if delivering only to houses that have standard mail, a postie (i.e. me) should not be claiming extended delivery overtime should they get back after 1430! I should not claim the late finish and enjoy the premium of the election and door2door material! He insisted that I could not claim the time spent putting the unsequenced election material in my frame, despite the double-prepping full-timer is never going to put that mail in the frame for me and this new start time meking in very touch and go the make the final special, even without dealing with "deads" before I bundle up. I was pressured into losing 15 minutes overtime to allow for the time when I was trying to relieve pressure on myself this morning (when I did not do "deads" before setting off and again making my final specail by 5 minutes)!

My walk takes ~4.5 hours to deliver on average through a typical week, even without door2door or this short-term election material.
Being a big round with lots of signature parcels in my full-to-the-brim trolley, I'm going to do well to get my walk ready to go before 1030 with this new regime of coming in at 0900.
Can they really stop me getting extended delivery overtime when I usually have 20% of my D2D with me, if I finish after 1430? This is going to be very contravertial once the D2D is increased later this year!
Same for election material? I can accept this if I was going to a letterbox only with a premium, but not when the house has other standard mail too.

Given thatI receive Working Tax Credits, would your advice be for me to "cut off" once I know I will reach the 30 hours threshold for the week?

No doubt somebody will put me right but no delivery should be taking 4.5 hrs in the first place !

If your manager is refusing to pay overtime/excess then cut off and take the mail back ! As long as you inform him before you leave the office that you intend to break off at your finishing time then he will have to either offer the option of excess to complete or have the headache of finding someone to finish the delivery !

Don't be bullied - As long as your doing the job correctly then you have nothing to worry about ! Find out your options with your office union rep or a more senior colleague !

I always claim (and get paid) any overtime I work. It's always due to 'pressure', never down to door to doors or other leaflets. If my manager had a problem with paying me overtime, I'd say fine, I'll be back here at my proper finish time, and I'll let you deal with the undelivered stuff.

The claiming of O/T for election material is a NO because we are already getting a payment for them. seen as you took none out on your delivery but still worked over you can claim the O/T for that but not for the prepping of your E/M.

In our office were getting 5p per item for the polling cards ( 3 days to deliver) and 3 hours O/T for all other E/M addressed (3 days) un-addressed (7 days)

Boymay is correct regardless of whether your a town walk or rural technically the agreement that states 3.5 del span still holds ground speak to your rep or branch and see how the land lies on your D/S as they seem to long.

Since the re-sign, where I had little choice of a walk having started 5.5 months ago, the irony is I chose this round for the overtime potential to boost up my contract 22.5 hours to at least 30 (for Working Tax Credits)! If I had been told that I would not be paid pressure extended delivery when carrying any D2D or election material, I would have chosen the "nice" round of the three offered.

Since joining this forum, I have read a little about the workplan for a walk:-
My round start immediately outside the office and loops back to finish 2 minutes away.
Unless I have something specific to do after work, I normally stop around halfway for my meal relief of 20 minutes... Although I've read I am entitled to 30, given I now start at 0900 and finish at 1430 in theory (with 1 hour prep overtime).
On a day without stopping for meal relief, the quickest i have done the round is 3.5 hours on a Monday, by far my quietest day of the week. The size of the walk grows gradually throught the week to a top plateuax on Thurs/Fr/Sat, on which days I expect the walk with meal relief to take 4-5 hours.
Setting off in a few mins to a Saturday round where I now start at 0700, will hopefully leave the depot ~0845 and return ~1330 (and that's without D2D or election material).

Seems a real stitchup :/

My union rep is awesome, he tells everyone in our office not to run round and take your meal relief but plenty still get round and make time, I looked at the signing out sheet today......11.20, 11.25 finishes for full timers, making a good 1 1/2 hours........these people have no brain.

I got told this week if I take election stuff there is no o/t so I left all the election stuff, manager couldn't say a word because I have childcare issues, by far the best bargaining tool for us all, use it!!!

you should claim and be paid all O/T whether you take election material or not.it angers me to hear so many posties that are brainwashed by lying DOMS into thinking they can't claim for going over their time with election material
