Longer Saturdays with New Agreement!

I have not been on here for a couple of years but am keen to get the views of other posties on the outrageous proposals for working on a Saturday until 3 or 4pm. This would affect tens of thousands of posties who either watch/play football, play golf or just spend time with their family and friends, and I for one do not want my short weekend shortened any further. I am sure that those who formulated this agreement will not work on a Saturday! As for their opinion that there is customer demand for Saturday deliveries, I have worked on front line delivery for 26 years and see no demand for such deliveries. People are usually out doing something and couldn't care less about getting mail on a Saturday. I want to hear what others think. Cheers.

Well the management at Royal mail dont have a clue about Saturdays, cause most businesses close for the weekend and most people do their shopping and other things.But saying that have they got a clue about anything to do with mail deliveries? Family friendly my @rse.What a miserable ,pathetic company this is to work for. A job that i was once proud of, but now think its ended in the sewers.I work on the frontline and have done for the past 14 years and i think i know what my customers like and dont like about this company.Lets just say the words they express are not very good in the very least.

WHEN I REALISED THAT THE CWU DO NOT REPRESENT GENUINE POSTMEN AND WOMEN I LEFT THE UNION AND I WOULD SUGGEST ALL UNION MEMBERS TO DO LIKEWISE AFTER THEY HAVE VOTED A RESOUNDING NO TO THIS IMMORAL AGREEMENT NEGOTIATED BY LEADERS OF THIS UNION IE: MORE WORK WORK FOR LESS PAY AND LONGER SATURDAYS AND THE UNION CALL THIS FAMILY FRIENDLY. Do the managers really want long Saturdays, those at the top are so detatched, your opinion means nothing.
Some compromise must happen, we want Monday to Friday deliveries, loads of businesses dont work on a Saturday.

First class mail is falling and the growth market is in delivering unaddressed mail which doesn't have to get there urgently. The more companies are willing to lengthen the time frame in which they want their flyers delivered, the cheaper the price is for them.

There is no decent business reason for later Saturday finishes. It is all about making the job so uncomfortable that staff leave voluntarily.

My Mrs works in retail and doesnt get home till 730pm on a saturday. She starts at 9am too.

She doesnt see what all the fuss is about. She says they will have to take hours off the other days to make saturdays longer plus with a 39 hour week and a standardised start time we sould be looking at relatively shorter weekdays.

Of course i told her to do one.

They can't make you do anything.....just remember that.......if you have childcare issues on a saturday then they must accommodate you, you guys are fretting over this but there's no need, just stand your ground, explain you have childcare issues (by far the best bargaining argument) and they have to work out a solution for you, I for one won't be working past 12:20 on a saturday or 13:20 if start times go back.........just chill out and see what happens, I voted 'no' by the way but if this new agreement does get passed then it creates problems for management, just stand your ground! :)

royal mail had the cheek to say us posties are living in victorian times because of our working practises.well delivering on saturdays is just that!!!
most of my customers dont give a flying f**k if they recieved mail on saturdays or not.i know this because they have told me many a time.
beacuse of saturday deliverys you cant really go out late fridays,cant organise anything for the weekend with your family i.e footie,weekends away etc
and now they want us to finish later on saturdays.

i mean when i first started this job it was bad enough working six days a week but at least you could suffer the saturdays because you were home really early but to now extend our finishing times is a joke.lets be honest but saturdays now is one of the heaviest of the week.give it ten years and they will have us walking the streets on sunday!!!

Actually they will do all they can to accomadate you, however if suitable work cannot be found, you may need to move to a nearby location
instead that helps with your working pattern issues, Dont really think this is fair on the rest of us & if what you say is correct why is the
CWU telling us all to just say what you claim

I do a rural deliver which has 350 delivery points.The round incorporates a large industrial estate on the edge of the town.My round in the week takes 3 1\2 hours.On a Saturday the majority of businesses are shut and my round takes 1 1\2 hours! when the businesses were sent a leaflet from my boss asking if they still required thier mail to be delivered on a Saturday despite being closed,the answer was no,due to security reasons(i.e mail left in view over the weekend etc),and also that there was no point it may as well be delivered with Mondays mail.There is no demand for Saturday working at all,and if RM stopped Saturday working they would make all the savings theyve dreamt of,by having no need for rotates etc.Its just the company being bloody minded,and their way of making up for the years they let us job and finish(which was their idea in the first place!).Its not about the customers,its more about ""we will make u work bloody hard for every penny you get"

I agree, longer saturdays will end up costing them more money.

Theres other problems too.

Later sats mean less people are likely to be in resulting in a build up of packets in callers office.

Also areas near town centres will be congested due to shopping and football crowds. CDV's will struggle to finish on time due to traffic congestion.

Ill thought out.

Monday to Friday would at a stroke remove approx 16% of the workforce.
Are you prepared to see that many people lose their jobs?
Would you be happy if it was one of you?
