ash cloud and deliveries

I heard last week that when the ash starts to settle we won't be sent out on delivery for health and safety reasons, anyone else heard of this???

I get coevered in Ash every morning with all the smokers in our yard. yet the managers won't tell them to smoke off the premises.

they'll tell you it is safe if you avoid breathing for the entire length of your delivery.

on a more serious note i couldn't care less how this ash cloud affects the mail but i am due to fly out on my hols in a couple of weeks and am very concerned that it could bugger up my holiday plans.

It was actually the union that said we won't be going out on delivery, its starting to make the news that breathing in the ash can have an effect on your lungs, people with lung conditions are to stay indoors and make sure they have there medications on hand, dr hilary said for people that enjoy jogging to not go for several days, so it sounds as though there is a health issue and it shouldn't be ignored.

And we're not to go out in the sun during the day, and not to go out if conditions are icey and to take plenty of fluids etc. but we know that RM do not take H&S seriously, to them it's only a paper exercise so that they can say that 'we have proper procedures and the posties just ignored the recommendations'.

So if there was a uk warning, milkmen weren't doing there rounds, bin men weren't doing there rounds, anyone that spends alot of time outdoors to do there jobs, we would be the only ones still working! Just wouldn't happen, it wouldn't be allowed.

They might issue you with masks to protect you from the ash, if/when the time comes (it won't neccessarily still be over the UK when it reaches ground level). But unfortunately, they're crap! Some people have been issued them, when we've had problems with high levels of dust in the air, at the RDC. And although they're very effective at keeping the particles out. They don't let enough clean air through, so people generally struggle a bit. So I don't know if you'd be able to cope doing Deliveries with them.

Checked out any of the US court awards for granulomas yet Andy? Worth a look ; dust particles, micron size,wet strength agents,extraction levels,continuous exposure,long term chronic and worse health effects.
Be a shame to wake up dead tomorrow and know the buggers got off scot free
