Postal sector liberalisation in the EU has been a disaster. It was an initiative based on the dogma that competition is always good. It was hoped that opening up the postal sector to competition would lower prices and make it more efficient. Even Maggie Thatcher didn't want to privatise Royal Mail. The postal service is a service that ensures delivery to every door. It makes sense to allow national postal services to use the profitable parts of the business to fund the service parts and if this provides a lot of decent jobs with good terms and conditions, what is the problem?

The aims of liberalisation have not been achieved. EU countries now have a more expensive and inefficient postal service. Only an idiot, or idoit, can believe that competition solves all. Some countries, like Finland, have got round the EU rules by making competitors have to provide the Universal Service Obligation. We should also do this and then RM could benefit from the boom in internet shopping. The whole EU thing was flawed from the start because each country's postal service started from different points. It is mainly DHL and TNT that are benefitting. Liberalising the postal sector has been a stupid and costly political experiment.

What he doesn't realise is that private companies only want profitable parts of any service.
So you would end up paying a tenner to send your granny in Inverness a birthday card.
These people prefer there to be no regulation of any markets.
This is exactly the same capitalist model that brought the banks to their knees not so long ago.

To be more exact he is a Conservative Libertarian as in to the right of that particular political philosophy. I had to read up on it when I took a Political on line test and it said I was a Left/Socialist Libertarian.
