Stitching up a Manger
I thought long and hard about posting this. Because if anyone in my office reads this they will work out who I am.... but... this really annoys me.
Our Union Rep has basically tried to get our DOM sacked by reporting him to his Area Rep about a certian thing the DOM allowed to happen.
It's simple really. Due to terrible staff shortages he allowed people on holiday to come in and do overtime during their holiday. I know this is not allowed and I belive is called 'ghosting' He did what he needed to do to get the service delivered.
The job got done. Mail got delievered.
The upshot is that the DOM got called to a meeting today. I will find out tomorrow if he still has a job.
Is this the way for a Union Rep to behave? He was pleased with himself.
Why did he not go to the DOM and say "you really should not do this and next time I will have to report it"
I know some will be pleased that a DOM might be sacked ; but surely the attitude from the Rep is wrong?
Comments please

ghost over time is not what you have described, from what you have described he will probably get a pat on the bat for getting the duties covered, if you have heard ghost over time mentioned he may be in the s**t, from how i understand it, he would have paid the full shift amount to the guys coming in regardless of if they finished early, ie normal 8 hour duty and he called in a volunteer, said volunteer completes full duty in 5hr30 min but is paid for 8 hours, thats ghost over time as i understand it

I can't see him getting in any trouble at all for this, i have come in to work on various days during AL before.
Surely it's no different to working your day off, as someone else said his superiors will be pleased he covered the duties.
It takes more than that to get rid of DIM!!!

I can assure you that your situation is not unique, it has happened many times in my office.
Although the practice goes against agreements, your manager will not get sacked over this. Once he explains his predicament to his dom, if he is already unaware of it, he'll just get a lecture on procedure....nothing more

Re: Stitching up a Manger
This happens in my office a fair few times over the year. Our rep is happier to see the work go to us than to get casuals in, which is the managers last choice.
If your manager is a decent sort i really cant see him getting too deep in the poo for this.
As for me there is no way i would come in whilst on AL but others do need the money badly and why let the money go out the office when it can help them out

Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

The Manager won’t get sacked for this mate. They do this all the time. When RM has enough staff they say you have to take your leave, when they are short of staff they call people in off their leave or ask them to work their leave.
If you ask me your union rep is a knob pursuing it. In fact he or she has just marked their own card…

Just to add to this. there is to many bootlickers and asslickers in Royal Mail that say yes to everything. because of these people that is why the company is in a total mess. i.e coming in early everyday for sweet FA not taking breaks. covering walks on O/T like pratts. let the managers struggle and let them go to their managers complaining. anyone that does favours for RM nowadays get what they deserve in the future. NO sympathy from me. but will you lot listem.....Jenny Manchester wrote:The Manager won’t get sacked for this mate. They do this all the time. Aren't DOMs responsible for staff resourcing in their own office? if there are staff shortages they should be advertised. so really it's his fault for not getting staff in. more cutbacks so we have to do extra work and royal mail make the savings. the people who came in when on leave are either stupid or desperate. why can't other workers see that them taking on extra work is denying somebody else a job. it's a me me me attitude, that's why there's no solidarity anymore. if the mail doesn't go, it doesn't go for a reason, for example a terrible staff shortage. then something has to be done about it instead of us cutting corners. I suppose your rep is just following procedure, but if he's got a personal vendetta against this guy maybe he isn't mature enough to be a rep in the first place.hampshireman wrote: Due to terrible staff shortages he allowed people on holiday to come in and do overtime during their holiday. Ghosting is starting overtime in your original duty time and claiming for entire block of overtime regardless of when you finish.hampshireman wrote:I dont understand 'ghost' ; it was just a term put to me.island_boy wrote:ghost over time is not what you have described, from what you have described he will probably get a pat on the bat for getting the duties covered, if you have heard ghost over time mentioned he may be in the s**t, from how i understand it, he would have paid the full shift amount to the guys coming in regardless of if they finished early, ie normal 8 hour duty and he called in a volunteer, said volunteer completes full duty in 5hr30 min but is paid for 8 hours, thats ghost over time as i understand it

In my office we get 2.15 hrs per half walk covered. Ghosting isnt acceptable but finishing the OT before the 2.15 hrs is generally acceptable as the DOM knows no one would volunteer if they had to work until 5pm.
Cant wait till the new agreement/later starts comes in! Who in their right mind is going to want do OT then?
At the moment theres a hardcore of docket bashers who cover saturday absences after their duty mainly because of the early finish. No chance of anyone doing any OT on saturdays when later starts/WSMs come in. Dumb ass Royal Mail...

As long he doesn't force you to cancel holidays plans ie if you are going to Madrid on holiday he shouldn't stop you. but if you are at home sitting down in the garden. it won't be too bad. As long you have the choice to accept or refuse. (assuming the Dom is male)

But isnt ghost overtime FRAUD ? The postie is guilty in doing it and the dim guilty of paying it....pickaname wrote:Ghosting is starting overtime in your original duty time and claiming for entire block of overtime regardless of when you finish.hampshireman wrote:I dont understand 'ghost' ; it was just a term put to me.island_boy wrote:ghost over time is not what you have described, from what you have described he will probably get a pat on the bat for getting the duties covered, if you have heard ghost over time mentioned he may be in the s**t, from how i understand it, he would have paid the full shift amount to the guys coming in regardless of if they finished early, ie normal 8 hour duty and he called in a volunteer, said volunteer completes full duty in 5hr30 min but is paid for 8 hours, thats ghost over time as i understand it

It happens a LOT in my office, those on A/L or rest week coming in to cover their own duties.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
