Family friendly

Post by mitzi »

I imagine this has been raised before but has any provision been made within the dialogue of the agreement for family friendly working. I have looked but cannot see anything which guarantees proper consideration will be given to those who are affected by changes to finish times etc.
After having a conversation with a senior manager whose attitude was "some may have to find another line of work", then I thought I had better ask if anyone had any info.
Maybe Dingo,The Truth or Lovejoy would like to comment.

Well firstly reps can use the revision process to build in these sort of duties.

Secondly if it is a genuine family friendly case (childcare etc) then the law of the land applies.... as it does now.

I'm sure you will find a line about family considerations being taken into account where possible. But at the end of the day it stands for nothing. The Agreement gives your DOM free reigns to have you work whatever hours he wants and have any finish time he likes even if that means finishing 3hrs later than you usually do and have planned your life around. Family friendly is a nice term but in practice something RM don't actually care less about and make no firm commitments to.

What is the law on that? I've seen a few staff with their kids in the DO or in the car park because they've had to finish late. Even used to see a guy finishing off his walk with his bag on one arm and pushing a push chair with the other.

And that law in case you are not aware is about as vague as this agreement and can ALWAYS be overridden by that old favourite...Business Requirements. :cuppa

Its only a no if you or your representatives are completely incapable of using the agreement or the law if needed. If that the fault of CWU HQ as well??

If you lot could summon half the spirit you show on here to challenge management then you'd be ok.

So if my manager doesnt let me have family friendly its my own fault or my local reps?.
Thanks Lovejoy.
Expect my CWU resignation in the post.
After voting NO of course.

You mean like when our small office challenged management over the way forward agreement? Only for us to have our strike dates cancelled by the union, who eventually allowed us just one day of i/a before telling us we were on our own and would receive no backing from them as everybody else had agreed it.

lovejoy, with all due rspect you over estimate the law.

The requirements of RML mean I have members whose desired shift pattern does not happen as the D.O is still under lock and key. The law stands firmly behind the employer if they have a genuine buissness case not to grant the request.

Lovejoy you are trying to lay this one off on the law but THE AGREEMENT should contain clauses to protect family life. The law guarantees MINIMUM worker rights and it is thereafter the role of THE UNION to improve and add to those stautory minimum requirements.

Next you will be saying we are only due the minimum wage by law so should accept 5.90 per hour? A total joke of a union. I also will be leaving the CWU after voting NO to caving in to the self-serving Capitalist's agenda.
