as long as you know the person or you know he works in the shop or firm you are delivering to cant see a problem with it

You should really refuse and deliver it. However if like me you know the persons by there first names and prob see them all the time over the past 6 years, then i give it to them.

If I don't know them, then I insist on them producing some ID.

On one occasion, a fella said "ok postie" and darted over the road, took his keys out of his pocket and opened the front door. I said "that'll do for me, mate" and gave him his post. "Well what was all that about, then?" says he. "You wasting my f**king time?" LOL!

This normally stops them moaning but if not then ask " are you willing to get me the sack to save yourself a few seconds " ??

If they produce ID then they can have it. If not, I deliver it as I don't want to lose my job... as s**t as it is, it more or less pays the bills.

Sometimes they are miles away from their supposed address. To be safe ask for the name and then if your not happy tell them you have nothing for them then post it through as nomal.

That bugs the tits off me.Just because they know you and you know them,they think it's perfectly reasonable to ask you for their mail when you are three drop boxes away from it!

There's a pair of lifelong unemployed low life scroungers on my walk (they live together), and one day the bloke is sitting outside their house on the step. He asks me for their mail, so I hand it over, none the wiser that the couple of parasitic wastes of skin have just had a domestic. I carry on my way, and a couple of houses further down the street the housebound hag puts in an appearance at their front door, screaming that I've just given her mail to a complete stranger and that she's going to report me for handing out mail in the street. Needless to say I was flabbergasted, but I just got my head down and continued on and never heard anything about it from my line manager. I've had my revenge of sorts though, as in this case, payback isn't a bitch, it's a trip to the sorting office 5 miles away to collect several form lefts that she's had since (if it was practically anyone else on my duty I'd usually leave the items with a neighbour).

I know someone who got the sack for handing post out in the street.

Don't risk it always post through the letter box.

You could be sacked for that too. Nobody is given mail which belongs to someone else unless there is an official instruction for you to do so; (usually kept with the walk log at the frame). A notice on a door or a neighbour telling you that they were asked to look out for you is not sufficient and will not protect you when something goes tits up. Pouch it off or return it to base, if the person really doesn't want to make several journeys to the callers office then five minutes out to write an official request really doesn't seem like much of a task; (after all it is they who want a favour from you).

I was covering a guys walk and a man in a light Royal Mail jacket approached me and said ''anything for 53?'' looked through the bundle and there was. He said ''I'll take that'' and I had to say ''sorry i'll need to put it through'' and he was pointing at his jacket but ah just said ''Never know with sneaky Royal Mail just keepin myself right'' and walked together to his door which was right beside where he asked and felt an idiot having to walk into his garden and then hand it to him when he opened the door.

But I think I done the right thing.
