Ha! I use to get that all the time......stick to your guns and say No!

I'm part time so it would have been pro-rata not £400............Dom don't like it when you can tell them what they say aint the truth! :Very Happy

They do try, don't they...bless 'em. Just remind them that you are willing to be flexible, but it works both ways. You'll happily work over your hours on a Monday and Tuesday, but in return you'll finish early on Friday and Saturday. If they decline your kind offer, then it's not flexibility, it's enforced or unpaid overtime which you'd rather not have to do as it would cause you stress and you would probably end up off work as your doctor wouldn't issue you with a 'fit note'.

You cannot be made to work over your contractual hours if you don't want to.
Flexibilty exists in your work hours only (Pay and Modernisation agreement).

We have a notice on the CWU notice board reminding everybody that the wording of the flexibility agreement is that flexibility kicks in if there are unforseen events that can cause delay, the wagon bringing our mech breaks down, or some other rare calamity. It is not to be used simply to get free overtime out of workers, nor is it to be used to claw back hours, ie your manager thinks you finished early the previous day, so he expects you to work over for free today.
The stupid thing is that in our office they already had some flexibility, most of us had no problem with finishing late on odd days without claiming docket as we knew we might finish early on another day. Over a week it probably averaged out right. Since the flexibility agreement and its mis-use by line managers we are much more stroppy about it.

I have been led to believe that the level of flexibility in unforseen circumstances extends to 1 half an hour in a working week ! As a postman with a young family and a wife who starts work at 1pm the only day of the week I'm able to be flexible is on a saturday as we share the childcare between us.

We had a temp manager once in our DO who was a proper jobsworth demand I work over , he even called another manager in to try bully me into it (gave me the 'you voted for it/got the money' line, and was suprised when I told him it was in my savings account if they wanted it back as I voted no) , in the end he forced me to take the work out and I rang him at 12pm to let him know that there would be about a bag and a half coming back with me in 20 mins (he ended up meeting me to finish it himself :nana )

Also worth adding Flexibilty has to be agreed by the post person and the Dom. Your Dom can't just put it on you one day by saying you are working over your time today. If you can't do it just say so and they can't make you do it. This Flexibilty is all based on goodwill from us. Flexibilty can only be mon-fri and can only be 30mins, the hours can not be banked so if you are asked to work over on a Tuesday then that 30mins must be given back to you the same week so you would finish 30mins earlier on the wed, thur or fri.

chalkie,

If there are favourites in your office who are never asked to be 'flexible' you could put in a grievance for being discriminated against.

Overtime has always been worth and paid extra, because amongst others things, the work becomes harder (other things to consider are having to buy extra food/drink). You should not have to work an hour to make up an hour, if you were paid you would get time+ 1/4 or whatever. An hour worked after 6/7 hours is not worth so much as an hour after doing what is already a full day. This is another nice money saver for RM.

sadly there will always be some doms who will chance their luck, but the bottom line is as always they cant force you to do overtime. with the 30mins flexibilty agreement. that only comes into play if the postperson is asked and agrees to the request, again they cant force you to do it, simply say no if you dont wish to do work the extra 30 mins, and they cant use this part of the agreement to bank hours autimatically.
