scaremongering or reality
scaremongering or reality? lets look at the scenario that the "agreement" is accepted, at the forthcoming election David Cameron and his cronies become the next government. 3years down the line RM have shed some 24,000 jobs, mainly through natural wastage as the workload has forced the majority of leavers out as duties prove to be physically beyond what some can withstand, those that haven't toe'd the line have been forced out through disciplinary means.Ken Clarke is given the task of completing the job that Peter Mandelson started in 2009 ie privatisation of RM.the government promise to rectify the shortfall in the pension scheme (meaning the taxpayer has to somehow foot the bill) at the same time the government get their hands on what money is in the scheme(approx £20billion) TN T arethe successful bidders for RM,they immediately draw up new contracts for the beleugered workforce based on a generous 5 per hour above the minimum wage, the £20.60 supplement for d2d deliveries is scrapped plus any other .allowances RM had with the defunct CWU union, they went into liquidation some 2years previous due to mass resignation of the membership after the 2010 so called agreement. business and the general public don't escape this scenario, zonal charging will be introduced meaning mail to outlying districts will be the most expensive to send,Saturday delivery will become a thing of the past, getting rid of saturday delivery will allow TNTto adopt a similar working system as to that which is used on the continent ie 75/25 part time employment

Re: scaremongering or reality
SPOT ON MATE,new contracts issued as per dutch model, cwu hierarchy funded by royal mail due to mass exodus, wimbledon will survive, only because rm need the reps to implement the agreement, most reps will resign ,hassle from members will see to that, area reps will pick up the shortfall on full time release, sign of units then go into hiding until the flow of conduct cases start.process the dismissals, leaving a shattered bullied workforce struggling to cope with a workload based on a top ten percent workrate.forget the red herring door to door, hayes and ward stopped the pre xmas strike WHY ? ...... brown mandelson crozier pressurised them.... gates will be locked ,new contracts,,etc, deal now done on the same basis our way or else ...THE CWU HAS CAPITULATED ,new blood at the top is needed.wimbledon has gone into survival mode.. UNDERSTANDABLY.the problem is this.both rm/cwu recognise that strike action is a short term plan, members wont go on strike indefinatley, A STRONG UNION REQUIRES STRONG MEMBERS,look at your unit members ,mail centre members, are they strong staunch members? NO .how many turn up at meetings ?
job and finish ,personal greed, apathy, wtl, insecurity ,have taken the fight out of us,trying to convince members that the reps are on there side has been blown away by both pay and modernisation, and now this.to sell this deal requires losing credability.this is a pay cut, more work, strict work rates applied to ensure compliance and no cut offs, only the fittest ,will survive the next few years on delivery.a return to starting early to get the job done will be the answer to those of us who would rather start early for no pay than get hassle from the doms, missing meal breaks, cutting corners, ignoring health and safety, will be the norm,
WE HAVE IN ALL PARTS OF ROYAL MAIL WEAK COMPLIANT MEMBERS.YES THEY HAVE JOINED THE CWU CLUB BUT ONLY IN NAME.THEY BREAK MOST AGREEMENTS DAILY,DONT COMPLAIN,CUT OFF,TAKE BREAKS,START EARLY,DONT WANT TO GO ON STRIKE,DO NOT ATTEND MEETINGS,SPEND MORE TIME IN THE DOMS OFFICE TELLING TALES ON FELLOW MEMBERS,THIS IS THE BIGGEST BARRIER TO THE CWU ,HOW CAN WE NEGOTIATE A GOOD DEAL WITH THE EMPLOYER WHEN DAILY OUR LEAD NEGOTIATORS OUR REPS ARE BEING UNDERMINED DAILY BY POOR CWU MEMBERS,ASSISTED AND URGED ON BY MANAGERS,
when we have the right to discipline and refuse cwu membership then and only then will we be a union with teeth, respected by managment.fewer members ,but good ones is whats required,

I agree entirely except that before "zonal charging will be introduced meaning mail to outlying districts will be the most expensive" is introduced rural deliveries will be reduced from daily to perhaps two a week.

And it will all happen in 2012 when the earth melts down!!

Its not all doom and gloom! but we are definitely at a fork in the road about where our union goes next imo. Labour or Tory, privatisation is on the way without question. The current leadership's policy of surrender will bring this closer, not push it back. If they won't seriously organise to build resistance to modernisation then they won't do it for privatisation. They will play around with early day motions, one off protests, stunts (remember the giant ASBO) just like they did in the "campaign" to stop the opening of the market.
The key to stopping privatisation is whether the union shows it will fight to defend pay, conditions, jobs. That means its members trust it and look to it for leadership, that they have strong workplace organisation to hold it to account. That means standing up for ourselves now. Whipping the union is part of shaping RM up for privatisation, pure and simple. If the workforce isn't whipped, big business will think twice about buying it up, because they can't guarantee they can squeeze it for profit and make millions more than their investment.
Join Labour, defend Corbyn from the Right, and fight for socialist policies

Re: scaremongering or reality
I don't know why anyone would be worried about privatisation.
Without being privatised we've seen our terms and conditions all shot to buggery, we've seen a complete transformation of our jobs from the fantastic pre-2003 ones we had, to the hell we never look forward to ones we have now, and the even worse ones we will have if the brainless vote "2010 and Beyond" in.
I mean, how much worse off will we be if privitisation comes in, and do we really believe that even if privitisation doesn't come in, our jobs won't be made even more worse because of future deals done between the RM/CWU management team.
I'm not sure I care all that much about the prospect of privitisation anymore.

8.69p per hour is a far cry from the £6 an hour envisaged working for TNT.

Well DH I can honestly say that it doesn't bother me because the absolute worst case scenario for me is 19 months when I will be 65.DirtyHarry wrote:I don't know why anyone would be worried about privatisation.

As a word of caution to you, though I don't know how long you have to do, everyone should be afraid of privatisation if they have any length of service left.
I worked for the ESI prior to the run up to privatisation and saw many of the features of terms and conditions being visited on the front line here, change, higher performance, multi tasking, (as in CDVs), lower pay rises, office closures and amalgamations and the then union I was in the GMB agreed to anything and everything to be at the feast. I was lucky to be in a position to take a handsome pay off and leave, which turned out to be a year early because it was delayed.
Well that's the background now for the fateful truth - within five years you wouldn't recognise a delivery office as it is today, I would imagine that the USO would disappear quite quickly, job losses by the thousands, zonal pricing would be instituted as quickly as possible, price increases you wouldn't believe all of course justified in the interests of profit and that is what drives a privatised company. TBH I can't envisage all the changes myself but I can tell you this when you look at EON, or any electricity seller it is so far removed from the world I knew its unrecognisable.
