I'm a delivery postman of 22 years, spans were 2.5 for first delivery and around 1 hour for second in the "Old days"

Later years have seen one big delivery of 3.5 hours, i was 18 when i started and just in my 40s now, it's hard word on the road and you want me to except 4 or 5 hours on the road?

Mate really come one, i really fear that this job will be impossible in the future for those 50 plus, i take it you work indoors with the radio on and nice breaks with a canteen?

My future of 4-5 hour deliverys in uniform that is not fit to do the job and a retirement age of 67 is very scary, you really need to think be for you ask these questions.

Been doing "the job" 23yrs and cannot see where 4-5 hr dely's are coming from!!
This will only be possible if you are on a 4 day week with 10hr days, there is no way I can see how mail can be sorted and prepped and meal relief taken, then going out for that amount of time!
If you stick to a 5 day week it means an 8hr day, so how much time is used up indoors with above and how much is left for dely....
As for the Sat..well we all seen that one coming and our sat in office are now very much the same as a normal day regarding the amount of mail coming in.
I think 9 day fortnights have the best chance for us dely guys/girls and as some one has already said what would the public think if this proposal is a no over working all our hours???

IPS would be reduced to packets and 15% of your mail,how long do you think that will take.
Prep time is also reduced with walksequenced mail although the figures are debatable.
You are also assuming it's the same guy who preps and delivers.
We have P/T shifts that are ready to tie up the minute the IPS is clear.
That means "in theory" at least with a 0700 start you could be ready to leave the office at say 0930 for a 1500 finish.

Yeah mate, I'm with you, as a 19yr old, I really enjoyed being out of the Office on delivery, and in approx 15+ years when I'm 60, I really look forward to being out on the streets carrying untold heavy bags for 5-6 hrs every day, oh the joy of just thinking about it!!!

I've a suggestion = The next time it is pissin down with rain, get a shoulder bag, lob a few bricks in it, go walking for 4 hours then,
do the same again for the following 4 days, then come back & comment with some idea of what you're talking about

When I applied to be a postman, it was back in the day when posties weren't expected to spend 4 or 5 hours out in sub-zero temperatures during the winter, and 4 or 5 hours out in the burning heat of summer.
As for the public, they can go hang, my health is far more important than their stupid misconceptions.

Yes how silly and selfish of us posties for looking after our health. Walking around for 4-5 hour or more with a 16kg bag on our backs walking at 4 miles an hour.I hope smudger isn't a Royal Mail employee or heaven help us if he's the type of person who will be getting a vote.

And when its raining they don't work and if they're out on a rainy day they take them under the piers for shelter - anyone remember the inclement clauses for deliveries?
