No More Bikes

There was a small piece on the front page of the Telegraph today saying that bikes would no longer be used for mail deliveries because according to Royal Mail "the roads are too dangerous". No source was quoted but if this is an official RM line ( and it sounds stupid enough to be ) then perhaps we should stop using our bikes immediately for the sake of our wellbeing. In deciding that bikes will not be used in the future has RM considered its carbon footprint? In our office there are around 100 posties which I guess would mean that we will need 40 to 50 CDVs. At present we barely have room for our current transport stock. How will this reduce costs? Will this quantity of CDVs cost less to buy an maintain than 100 cycles? Would I be unfair in thinking that a lot of these new ideas were scribbled on the back of a beer mat after a long session at the bar?

If this stupid park and loop idea goes ahead then RM will become one the most "ungreen" companies in Britain, and what about the cost surely it will take millions to buy all the vans needed, who thinks of these ideas, some university graduate who has never done a delivery in his life I bet or even stepped foot in a DO, why can't they leave thigs alone?

I work to my time because it's impossible to make any time on my delivery without running but the walks round mine are done by senior old boys that get done early and home by 13:30-14:00. I see them cycle home when I go to start my 30 minute ride back to the office. If I get paired with one of them I'm f****d cos they won't hang about and will piss off back to the office without me. If they are made to wait they will kick off and moan.

I reckon the ones that use there cars now ,SHOULD chip in the odd couple of quid for diesel .

Posted a topic on this subject a while back,Peak Oil,my concern was about the abandonment of cycles for gas guzzling motorized transport,toally absurd,get rid of this nehandertal management who havn't had an original idea since their abolition of the rather succesful two delivery method.
