Well, nothing will make the privitisation process more likely than a Yes vote on this Agreement. A Yes vote will see 400million pounds of new d2d buisness going straight into RM Plcs bank account instead of a fair share of it going into OUR bank accounts. And with over 300million group profits last year, RM could be making close to 800million annually if not more. If the pension fund blackhole is paid off, profits could be close to double that as RM paid something like 600million into it last year - still clearing 300million profit! And when more MC's close the wages bill could be 20,000 X 15,000GBP less - or another 300million.


Now, that makes the company very profitable and very attractive - even with the pension fund unpaid. But there's one other thing - a 'militant' workforce. Well what does this Agreement do about that? Plenty. The CWU are now in bed with RM and bending to their every wish so future IA is looking very unlikely. Unweilding staff will now be reigned in and even sacked with managers able to send people out on a 6 hour delivery as a 'punishment' and demand they meet the top 10% performance rate. When they don't they will be put on a quick track to sacking for underperformance. Potentially you could even see sackings on the spot for willful delay when knackered posties bring 2bags of mail back after 6hours pounding the pavements. This will be the ultimate weapon against the workforce that will ensure RM can be sold to buyers as a 'safe, predictable and controllable investment opportunity'.

Now if people are saying vote Yes because we will be privatised if we don't - think about how attractive a united and proud workforce actively telling it's bosses and Union they want to be treated with respect will be. When a workforce campaigns to be renumerated fairly for a fair days safe but productive work private investors loose interest. Their bottom line is profit and profit is made by increasing workload and cuttings costs/cutting wages - like our d2d payment for example. A Yes vote will be the final sign TNT are looking for to tell them RM employees can be screwed over while the massive profits are banked.

We all want RM to be a success but is screwing workers conditions into the ground while massive profits roll in a success for us? A success for the public and the service provided by posties on 6 hour deliveries? Or is it a success ONLY for the Board of Directors and future private investors? Vote Yes and you are to sounding the death-knell for Royal Mail as we know it. You will also make your job 200% worse than what it is at the moment.

You seem to forget that we are already part privatised and getting more so by the day.
DSA is privatisation and every minute of your working day spent handling and delivering DSA is a minute spent earning profit for TNT et al. All that loss making mail is slashing our pensions and pay

I don't think it makes any difference, i see us being privatised in the next few years. Probably when they have got rid of the 36,000 staff. And made 25% of the workforce part-time.
In our next agreement do you think another 25% will be made part-time making it 50%. If you see the picture RM will be all part-time within the 10 years.

At WTL the DOM was asked why car derived vans were being brought in in favour of cycles as they will cost more.

DOM said a van costs no more to maintain than a bike.

I agree with you 100% dingo, because the goverment plan for the pension scheme is to resolve it on their terms and in their best intrest. The proposal in the postal services bill involves RMPP being opted out of the existing pension legislation. Changing RMPP to a public sector pay as you go scheme. This achieves 2 things.
1) it removes from the The Pension Regulator the power to 'wind up' the scheme, which would cost RM or their shareholders £10billion.
2) it gives the Goverment a £20billion windfall. 'pay as you go schemes' don't have any assets backing them, they have a goverment/taxpayer gaurentee.

It just so happens that in doing that they remove the RM liability for the pension scheme, taking the debt (£5.9billion-SSAP24, £10billion-FRS 17) off of RM's balance sheet and making RM a saleable asset. Which currently it's not!
