Bristol CWU promoting RACISM & it's in writing.
(I've made this post to the Counters group also)
I'd like to bring something to the attention of as many CWU members as possible. This week I received communication from my branch of the CWU, I live in Bristol, am employed in Bristol and am part of Bristol CWU.
The sheet that was mailed to my home address shocked me!
It was sent out by Bristol Branch @ Lawrence Hill as is meant as an advertising flyer for an election candiate.
Firstly as I am not counter staff I shouldn't have been sent it. But more importantly I am astounded at the content! It states the Bristol rep is Welsh and displays the Welsh flag, then it goes on to inform me that "a vote against ****** is a vote for an inferior candidate". The other person standing in the election is English. How is Bristol allowed to condone this? How is a racist slur against the English permitted by a UNION? WHAT IS GOING ON? Surely a Union cannot be seen to promote a Welsh candidate as they believe the English one is "inferior"? Incidently, is Bristol in Wales (does that mean the value of my house has changed??). Have the Union gone mad? Has Bristol CWU not heard of Fairness & Equality? What about RACISM?
I am disgruntled that money paid by CWU members is being utilsed to bombard members home addresses with racist rubbish.
To anyone linked with Bristol CWU or is interested in the abolition of the type of racism Bristol are promoting - WHY HAS THIS BEEN ALLOWED TO HAPPEN??

Re: Bristol CWU promoting RACISM & it's in writing.
I expect there's many people who don't support racism in this Union. I'm disgusted with what I've been sent and I'm sickened by the fact it's been sent out on Bristol CWU headed paper. I'm actually considering making a high level complaint about it. I sure Billy Hayes would have something to say. Isn't it people like him to have fought for a fairness and equality policy? Isn't there a diversity policy that forbids comments being made on the nationality of another person? Aren't there PO counters people like Furey who are supposed to have some responsibility over what is sent to the members?AnotherLimey wrote:Storm in a tea cup
I can only imagine that if someone in the CWU has permitted a communication that could create a racists or nationalist issue then they could only be doing it for some sort of personal reward (!!)

Is that it? I`m sorry but I dont see how you can draw any element of racism from what you posted on here.PatchesNY wrote:(I've made this post to the Counters group also)

Just because one is Welsh and one is English it does`nt mean all statements refer to the different races of the candidates.
If you don`t have a vested interest in this election or rubbishing the Bristol branch then I would be very concerned about how you view life.

Re: Bristol CWU promoting RACISM & it's in writing.
The racist or nationalist slur that Bristol CWU have sent to my home address is on a advertsing poster that claims a vote against the Welsh person is an inferior vote. Therefore they consider the Welsh person's English oposition as being inferior.
I don't think any Union (the CWU or anyone else) advertsing poster should mention the nationality of anyone as their race is not relevant. Surely members should be voting for the best person for the job?
I'm not happy that the Union have portrayed an election campaign as being based on the birthplace of the candidate.
My personal interest is based on the fact my husband is Fijian, he brings enough stories of racism to our home without the Union I'm a member of posting it through my door.
This may be insignificant to you but I can assure you race issues are a huge deal to many people's lives. If Bristol CWU had written a vote against black or white people "is an inferior vote" then holy hell would break loose. How is this type of advertsing from a Union permitted?

the welsh comment to me looks nothing more than patriotic, and the 2nd comment isnt racist because it doesnt say he is inferior BECAUSE he is english, it just says he is inferior, you have implyed the rest

I agree the poster "implies" but it's implication from a branch of the Union and not myself. Again "I don't think any Union (the CWU or anyone else) advertsing poster should mention the nationality of anyone as their race is not relevant. Surely members should be voting for the best person for the job?"coxie wrote:the welsh comment to me looks nothing more than patriotic, and the 2nd comment isnt racist because it doesnt say he is inferior BECAUSE he is english, it just says he is inferior, you have implyed the rest
Race, nationality, birthplace or flags shouldn't be part of an election campaign for a Union rep whichever way you look at it.

Re: Bristol CWU promoting RACISM & it's in writing.
i agree but neither nationality has been insulted in the wording because of the country they are from, the welsh comment could be interprited as just giving more background info on the person they are voting for. I just watched the tottenham game and because the commentator called gareth bale the welsh left back and not just the left back does that make it a racist comment. I always think you have to give the benefit of the doubt as shotuing racisim is a touchy subject and you have to be sure because its not right calling someone a racist falsely. I think when there is room for doubt you have to give them that benefit.

Re: Bristol CWU promoting RACISM & it's in writing.
Apparently an official complaint has already been made. It seems the person writing the flyer did so without permission, implied she was being recommended by a branch that wasn't recommending her and got members home addresses without permission. So somebody somewhere kicked off last week before I even got my copy of the poster.
I don't know this person as she's a Po counters rep but evidently she is an embarrassment to the CWU and her unprofessionalism has shocked many. In my opinion she an embarrassment to her Welsh heritage also.

So you are disgusted at this so called "Racism"?
You are still banging on about even though everyone else that has responded thinks it's a non issue?
Now you say she is better off being a "Shepherd" being Welsh and all? (notice the W)
You have come here to talk about racism and such, but to be honest have just made yourself look foolish.
