ircom bosses meet CWU in effort to avert industrial action 11/07/2007 - 07:26:18

Management at eircom is due to meet the Communications Workers Union today in an effort to avoid industrial action.

Workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action for the first time in 30 years following the company's refusal to implement a 2% pay increase due under the social partnership process.

However, unions have agreed to hold off on serving strike notice pending today's talks with management.

The CWU says the company must commit to paying the 2% increase without preconditions if industrial action is to be averted.

At present, eircom wants to link the pay increase to work-practice changes, but it says it will put forward a new proposal at today's talks to resolve the stand-off.

I'm all for a bit on international solidarity. I'm no expert on the situation in Eire, but they've also has cuts in their health care and education budgets in the last year or two.

Is the CWU in the Republic of Ireland the same union as the one in the UK?

No, but it sounds as if their Post Office might be run by Leighton & Crozier (or clones of them).
