very interesting programme about a radical way of work ,going against traditional methods in which workers take over the work of the bosses.whether it would work in royal mail (i believe it would) .not too sure which forum to post it on.

We've all had it when a manager is late for work, for whatever reason, yet the mail still gets sorted & prepped, duties still get covered, everybody's happy.....so the question must be asked again......why does an office need more than one mgr in the morning, one in the afternoon and one more covering days off & A/L for 3 offices ( like an OPG reserve )? We all know the answer, so why don't RM know?

it was interesting to observe management when the chap who devised this said that they did an hours work a day.which from my experience is 30 minutes more than a lino and dom in rm.if they arent doing opg work.

your lucky.....we have 3 managers, 2 DOM supports and a trainee standing with their hands in their pockets for an office of just over 90.....plus they een send the poor phg out to do a walk......

In RM language it is an "aspiration" rather than the actual situation on the ground.....a little bit of blue sky thinking, out of the box with a staff of about 130, we have 2 DOMs, one DOM assist, 3 lineos and one temp ( who is actually rather good - ie he lets us get on with it, rather than trying to teach us to suck eggs - and treats us with respect....needless to say, if there is a mgmt cull, he'll be the first back in a blue shirt ). It could be worse, at one point last year, we had about a dozen mgrs ( some were in other DOs )

Would function easily with 1 DOM and 1 lino.

Management really do do nothing. They just stand and watch and fill in the odd form. An ex acting manager says when he was doing it they all went to the canteen for 4 hours when we went out.

If Royal Mail really do want to cut costs then an extensive management cull would save tens of millions.

I saw it and think it would work very well in our office. Replace all the managers with an extra person in the locker/callers office to deal with paperwork and complaints. It could be our responsibility to ensure our day off is covered and it is not rocket science to spot that a walk is not being prepped etc. All the work gets covered, complaints dealt with by the people who are best placed to deal with it and everyone happy. You could also split the money saved on a manager 50/50 with the staff.

Well said but poor postmen/women or uni grads do not make for the best managers it is people who know how the service is run and who know how to manage staff in a sympathetic way!. But having said that they can only do that without the interference of the managers above them and the area managers and of course :cfo and his buddy :mfo
