In need of some advice regarding sick pay

A collegue of mine has asked me to look into this , They had a major operation over a year and a half ago and was off work for 6 months receiving full pay, they returned to work last march so making that a year, had 1 or 2 absences since but only got statutory sick pay (is this right? shouldnt it be half pay?) anyway he wants to know when he will get paid full sick pay again. We have rang hr but they say they cant give us out that info and our managers say to ring hr, so is there a document which will tell us? or does anyone know difinitavley how this works?

okay first im not a union rep but haveing had a lot of sick because of a heart attack i have experiance of this !
A postman is entitled to 6 months full pay in any 4 year period so to put that in context if you were to go sick from say jan 1st 2009 and have six months off you would need to work untill jan 2013 before you received sick pay from RM again any further sickness will be paid at SSP rate with a top up from pensionable pay fund up to a limit then after that just SSP

Depends upon how long he was employed by rm before he first went sick as to half sick pay but if he was paid for six months full pay one would expect half sick pay for six months if no sick before hand or in between?.

If I'm reading this right I suspect your friend is falling between 2 sets of sick pay limits.

1. Assuming no previous sickness - after 12 months service, entitlement is 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay.

2. An overriding limit of 1year (IIRC) sick pay within any 4 year period, after which only SSP/pension rate is payable.

So potentially, and not knowing the full history, if the six months of full sick pay within 12 months brought the total up to 12 months in the last 48 (ie 6 months of sick leave the year prior for example) this would explain the drop from full pay to SSP.
