Walk sequencing
Just curious but what is the accuracy rate of these new walk sequencing machines?
The machines currently in use are forever spitting out missorts into my bundles. On top of that they have now developed a taste for sticking barcodes over all the addresses. Quite frankly I can't see that they save much time at all if any? So if the new machines are just as useless how the hell are they gonna save us any time?

Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Re: Walk sequencing
We have them in our office they are quite accurate but they don't save you much time. I can throw a normal full code sort box out in 15mins with a walk sequenced on it takes me 11mins. Plus you get arm ache doin the sequenced ones!

Re: Walk sequencing
We were shown a new video of how great these machines were end of last year. It included an interview with a postlady who said it saved her about 15 to 20 minutes maximum a day. This video we have been told is now unavailable. Funny that. I reckon with the d2d likely to be now included in the workload with a yes vote then this will counter balance the time lost due to walk sequencing.

Re: Walk sequencing
I'd say its not the accuracy thats the problem but the volume...
RM claim that "80% of all letters are now walked sequenced"...
our DOM at least has the honesty to admit that RMs figure isnt true, but still claims our D.O. recieves 60% sequenced...
the truth is in our particular D.O. we get no more than 30-40% of our letters walk sequenced... just 1 tray per frame per day

I agree with your times for a duty if you know it, saves you a lot of time if your a reserve on a duty you don't know.number one wrote:We have them in our office they are quite accurate but they don't save you much time. Agree about the arm ache, especially on the top row. RSI anyone.

Re: Walk sequencing
Yeah your right about saving reserves time but how much is the question? It will save them time with the trays they get off the machine but then when they come to throw out the mail from the ips they haven't a clue! You see when you throw a walk sequenced box out you don't really look at the road names as such you just look at the numbers so you don't take in where each street is located on your frame. Also the walk sequencing machine can only sort mail that has barcodes on them so if MDEC haven't bothered putting them on it has to be sorted on the ips. Used to get 3 code sort a day boxes now get 1 1/2 and the rest goes on the ips so we have machines but it's ended up we now have more mail to sort on the ips

Savings attributed to W/S - 20 mins compared to an unsequenced prepnumber one wrote:Yeah your right about saving reserves time but how much is the question? Re: Walk sequencing
We don't currently get all our mail sequenced and none of our flats are, so you do have to prep the top row, and your arm does get sore. I do think RSI could be a problem in the future.Glenno wrote:

If it's a white label with the barcode printed in black ink then chances are that the item has been through a flat sorting machine.Judgee wrote:On top of that they have now developed a taste for sticking barcodes over all the addresses.

but costs time at the frame/IPS when you have to peel if off
BTW they also come on handwritten and printed letters as well

Re: Walk sequencing
Can't you have your walk sequenced the way you want it, doesn't have have to be in the same order the frame runs does it?
If you told the sequencing machine that your walk was sequenced differently than the frame you could cut down the risk of RSI.
If you started at the first wing on your left, filled the top row of that wing then dropped down and filled the row beneath and so on that would probably cut down the chances of RSI.
Have a word with your safety reps and ask if it can be done.

Re: Walk sequencing
Only saves time at the outward MC, at an inward MC it either has to go through a machine in OCR mode or it gets sent to manual sorting.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Which saves time at the MCSpacePhoenix wrote:If it's a white label with the barcode printed in black ink then chances are that the item has been through a flat sorting machine.Judgee wrote:On top of that they have now developed a taste for sticking barcodes over all the addresses.![]()
