Cutting Off...

A couple questions about cutting off. I have only cut off once, as my boss is good at paying OT, and I need the cash. However, with the new agreement, I can see myself not wanting to play ball anymore.

So, cutting off. Does the post I bring back NOT get delivered? If I'm the last back to the office, then will it just sit on my desk, and I'll be expected to deliver it tomorrow? And then I cut off tomorrow, now the addresses at the end of my round have TWO days worth waiting for them...

Or is that not how it works? Can the boss the next day make me deliver yesterdays lot first? Sorta do the round backwards?

How much notice do I have to give the boss if I'm going to cut off? Now, I have no credit on my phone (or don't want to spend any for work purposes, anyway..), so do I have to tell him at the BEGINNING how much I'm going to bring back? Or should I just not take it out in the first place?

Tell him when ye go in that you wont complete in your time and do not wish to work overtime ( doesnt need a reason ) and then ask him whats to be done.

Depends on local practice but ideally someone else, maybe the manager,should be tasked with delivery the residue from your cut off.

Yes again it depends on local practices.

You should tell him as soon as you know you will have to go over or will be unable to complete. This could mean as soon as you get in the door, or as soon as an incident occurs on your duty that means you cannot complete.

How does this work?

A few wise words.

1. Don't call it cutting off when informing the manager they have be known to use this as a reason for a wilful delay charge.
2. Always ask the manager what you should do - never tell them. They are the managers they make the decision and as far as possible you follow those instructions.
3. Calling the office - there should be local guidelines but in the end you could always use a public call box and reverse the charges.

When cutting off there is always a risk of the cut off not getting done and you end up with it the next day. Happened to me many times, thing is not to worry about it , it is not your problem. You should ALWAYS do the part you did not do the day before, whether first or last it has to be done. If you have the days before cut off off , chances are you will have to cut off again ,so it builds up and up till the Lino has to act. The other year there was me and two linos delivering, trying to play catch up with my mail. The important thing is to tell your lino as soon as you have thrown up, you cant complete and ask what does he/she wish you to do , take it all out and bring it back or take as much as you think you can do in the time you have , it is up to them to tell you their choice

the fact we cant comfortably complete our walk on time and are sometimes forced to cut off is why royal mail is FAILING .

What about when the lino says you can complete. That's happened before to me, lino said "you can't not complete there's not enough mail to justify cutting off or claiming, that's willful delay" and then walks off. What do you do in that situation? cos that happens a lot in my office.

Do you bring it back? Put in a grievance? Sometimes asking what to do when there's too much isn't as simple as it seems when the managers are prepared to play mind games and bully. Especially for the newies.
