My view on the agreement now....Divide and conquer???

Hello all.

I have been keeping a close on eye on this forum and the wider web with regards to views on the agreement. Whether the views be from the workers, Royal Mail, the CWU, the media or the public I have read an equal share from them all.

The only people which same to have problems with the deal are the workers, myself included. Especially delivery staff (again myself included) as I think they probably are in line to lose the most financially. The media and the public are in the frame of mind that each and every employee of Royal Mail is gaining something and losing absolutely nothing. Which could not be further from the truth as delivery staff stand to lose around £20 (an average figure) a week. However I think we would have a hell of job trying to convince the media and the public of this fact though.

Are delivery staff going to have to lose £20 per week so all other employees in the business can gain a pay rise?
Are delivery staff going to have to work later on a Saturday so 75% of the full time work force can be maintained?

To me personally this is a hell of a sacrifice to ask delivery staff to make. I thought the CWU was supposed to fight for all it's members. If every delivery staff memeber pulled out of the union I think they would notice a difference on their fees they receive.

Can delivery staff really make the difference on the result of the vote for this agreement?
God knows we need the help of our fellow colleagues in different departments so we can all benefit from a fair agreement for all employees.

There again we have the people on deliveries who maybe only have a few years left to work or are actively seeking another job. They of course will be wanting to gain as much as possible financially before they leave.

Then there is the people who are part of the 'be grateful you have a job' brigade. I think I speak on behalf of most if not all postal workers that we are grateful for our jobs. What we are not grateful for is our pay being cut in return for our work load increasing. I really don't think anyone could argue that they'd be happy to do more work for less money. However if I was currently unemployed perhaps my outlook and attitude would be different.

If this agreement gets a no vote then hopefully something will come back which will benefit everyone including delivery staff.

If this agreement gets a yes vote then all employees who are not on deliveries will be forever in debt to their co-workers who are. They are indeed losing the most so you can gain.

So for all people not on deliveries can I just ask you all this.........

This time it's delivery staff that are being asked to pay a high price so others can gain. How long do you think it will be before your department will be asked to make cuts so the majority can gain?

I am not suggesting for one minute that all other departments will be voting yes. I know we will hopefully have lots of no votes from our friends and colleagues regardless of what part of Royal Mail they work in. After all we want a fair deal for all, don't we?

Once again I can only but blame the union at top level for the mess we are in. I thought it was Royal Mail's agenda to 'divide and conquer'. I never once thought the CWU would ever be part of an agreement which so blatantly 'divides (and conquers)' the workforce they are supposedly fighting for.

What kind of union divides it's members?

One that is out of touch that's for sure.

According to this post in News room, the business is only 22% part time now, so it looks like this deal is actually paving the way for less full time jobs.

They're not losing anything though. It's £20 a week they wouldn't of had. Whereas delivery staff could make up to £40 from D2D items and are now being asked to deliver more for less. Mail centre staff and drivers never delivered D2D items in the first place so they are losing nothing. However if mail centre staff and drivers are to be used when DO's are short staffed. I think they too would prefer a single payment for each D2D item they deliver as opposed to £20 for an unlimited amount.

Although it hasn't happened yet (to my knowledge). We already CAN be asked to work at other sites, INCLUDING DOs.

But anyone reading this agreement, and only looking at the money, needs their head examining! PLEASE, everyone READ THE WHOLE THING THOROUGHLY, before deciding how to vote!!!!!

"D2D monies will be turned into a delivery supplement paid 52 weeks a year for all delivery employees [OPG ORR] pro rata for part time employees"

so to me that reads delivery staff only not any one else, but to be honest don't know what a ORR is ?

care to enlighten me?

I don't know what ORR stands for. Although I was referring to the fact that MC and RDC Posties won't LOOSE any money through this agreement. I forgot to say that we won't get that particular suppliment. But like I said: Don't just look at the money. Whether it's because you'll gain or loose. Look at the whole thing, and bear in mind the long term effects. I for one, will be voting NO!
