Been given a warning. What does this mean.

Background.

I'm a newbie postman, started last nov as a part timer. I've been on a walking duty that just can't be done properly in 4 hours. Other posties say it's definitely a 4:30hr walk or more. I basically come in early (not paid) just to get out and finish the duty for 2:00pm so I can go and pick up my kids at nursery/school.

I got told off the other day by my manager because I had put un-endorsed miss sorts in the blue pouch off bag which I give to the post office at the end of the day. I said is the problem that they were unendorsed. Manager said no. The problem is that any miss sorts on my round that can be posted should be. Basically the manager said that when I finish my normal posting duty. I've got to spend another 20-30mins walking around posting stuff that got mixed in the wrong street etc...

So I did something silly and stopped putting miss sorts in the blue pouch and just keep them in my bag. This morning my bag was searched and they found them. The manager said that he has given me a 'warning' for this error.

What does this mean. Does it appear on my permanent record and what are the repercussions. Sorry for the long post.

Before he gives you a warning he must conduct a 'fact finding interview'. He will need to speak to you and get your side of the story and then decide how to proceed. If you are in the union get your rep to accompany you in ANY 'chats' formal or otherwise. If you are not in the union then ask a senior colleague to go with you. See if you can find out if there is any precedents in your office - ie has anyone else been done for something similar-and found out how they were dealt with. Its my guess you'll get a slapped wrist, maybe a conduct note (worthless piece of paper) or 're training' and a stage warning which will stay on your file for about a year. I wouldn't worry too much, some people in our office have lost specials and ended up as managers!! Just saying he's going to give you a warning is not the same thing. Don't be frightened, bullied or harassed into doing anything which seems unfair and NEVER have a discussion about the incident alone. Any probs then go onto the union room on this site and get advice there. Good luck!

id urge you to join the union if youre not already in it. Then tell your rep everything you have just said, he should be able to look at your seemingly unfair delivery volume and help you out with the mail in your bag matter.

We used to call them "sweats" for some reason. This sounds a bit harsh really as i (and most my office) bring a few items back each day and place them in the missort frame. Normally the managers have gone home

Yep. I'm going to join the union asap. I'll be speaking to my rep on on Thursday (day off tomorrow).

To be honest. I'm really pissed off about it. I come in early (and don't claim o/t), work my arse off to finish on time and act professional and this happens. Talk about deflating.

dont worry about it just try not to take any mail home - cant u nip into a post office with anything u have left over? even if its not in a blue bag

and if you run out of time on shift its not ur fault ? u do know about cutting off i presume.....

if you have only been warned i would keep quiet and carry on if i was you, that is an instant dismissal in my office, if you get only a warning you are getting off lightly. Regarding pouching off, if you have to put missorts in then ring your line manager and ask him if he wants to come pick them up or if you can put them in the bag because your duty time is near the end and you wont have time deliver them, if you still had time then you would. Or if he gets funny tell him you will have to cut off your walk early to allow time to go back to the office to return your missorts, he will soon give you the ok to put them in the pouch. Personally id be a good boy for a couple of weeks till your warning has all blown over and lay low. By the way your an idiot for getting in early, its people doing that which make this job harder for the rest of us, if your walk is too long then get in on your time and dont work for free and cut off each time you cant complete within time to highlight the fact that it cant be done. If you worked in tescos would you go and sit on the checkout and start serving people and hour early everyday for free? if not why work for free just because your a postman, you have the right to finish at 2:15 and if that means cutting off so be it, if the walks too long then thats the managers problem to sort out not yours.

Not really. Never had the term 'cutting off' really explained to me.

im sorry i cant help because as far as i knew it was ok to take missorts back with you ?

you can only do what u can in your time and if you have spaire time then yeh go back and deliver missorts but if not.

CUT OFF its when u pouch off mail when u dont have enough time to complete it.

Apparently you must let your DOM know before the shift or call in to alert this ...
