The Lie About Later Starts !!

Post by AnnexeB »

So, having recently started nights on the CSS machines, me n my buddy were pondering ........ a couple of years ago we were told we had to start later, because of speeding restrictions for the RM trucks, mail couldnt get to offices till much later !!!
Yet, working these CSS machines, we`re sorting mail from Midnight, with plenty of mail sequenced and ready for pick up, to smaller DOs within a 10 mile radius, from around 3am. And then we continuously sort mail for the same offices, ready again at 5am.etc....etc....til 9 am.
Our offices could easily begin at 5 am with plenty of mail to be getting on with, till the non sequenced mail arrived for around 6am as it does now.

So why are the union not highlighting this analomy, and takin the fight back to RM for earlier starts, and better service for customers ?????

Probably because it's not economical to make three trips to the same office, so they'll wait until all the mail is prepped before delivering it to the individual offices. I can't see start times going backwards unfortunately  And customers seem to be the last thing they are worrying about, it's all money money money

Ive always thought, why not start 10000 drivers/nightshift folk earlier, instead of 110000 postmen later?
The union must look at this, id rather start earlier and finish earlier than what were doin now.
All those in favour say aye.

I have to correct you on this because we get 4 every day except tuesday.
One during the night flats and packets
One at 4.50 first batch of WSM flats, specials, tracked and packets.
One at 6.25 second batch of WSM,packets and manual letters.
One at 7.10 mostly packets.
And we are 20 miles from our MC.
We are one of the "lucky" D.Os as we are so far away from our MC our mail goes through the WSM first.

It all starts with a pipe line/work plan which begins at the last collection for the given day then can only the mail be collected transported segged sorted and then thus be transported to another office which is segged sorted transported as it always was BUT WITH WALK SEQUENCING IT HAS TO BE FED THROUGH THE MACHINE AGAIN AND THE OUT LYING OFFICE WILL BE PUT THROUGH FIRST AND THEN TRANSPORTED TO THEIR OFFICE WHILE THE OFFICE IT IS SEQUENCED IN IS INVARIABLY LAST!.The only way to keep our start times and finish times is to make the last collections at 3pm or earlier but even then their is no guarantee as royal mail will still seek to reduce numbers through any means necessary it is an ever changing goal post one we can never cover all corners!.

There is your answer, some offices will not be getting that 9am sort until 10,maybe even later.

Annex B post exposes the myth and fears of some very well. The fact is not everyone will have to work to 3 in fact it will be the minority. The majority of postal workers will still finish before 2.

Of course it will depend on where your office is in the walk sequencing order and of course where your walk is in the batch system. The agreement expains that.

In addition another myth is that everyone is going to work till 3 on a saturday.

This is a change of tactic is it not. :no no
Since you came on here you have constantly warned members to expect later finishing times and longer saturdays.
Now because HQ now realise that it will probably break the deal suddenly its all a myth.

The Truth wrote
"Once your office has walk sequencing then it is expected that work which is normally IPS and prepped in your office at 0600 will now be run of the machines. All work on these machines have to have 3 passes and will if it works ( the millon dollar question ) will mean that your appox 40% of your work does not arrive in your office until after 8 and could be as late as 10 that work then has to be put into the frame ( it should be sequenced but will take time as the intial work you have already prepped is in your frames already."

The Truth wrote
"So Your going to get walk seqeuncing there are now 70 in the UK , and this will increase at 3 per week being installed until the last ones are introduced in Waltham cross in November 2011 and your work once you have walk seqencing is not going to come into your delivery office at 0600 for IPS pruposes and prep purposes as it does now. Instead it will come in at least 2 hours later and in some cases up to 4 hours later.
The machines are going to run 6 days a week which means you will be getting that work later on Saturdays."

The Truth wrote
"The Union would love to find a compromise where instead of the 40% of work from 0600 in the morning going on the walk sequnecing machines having to then have 3 passes each batch of twelve walks meaning work which used to be in your office from appox 0600 wont arrive until as late as 10 but what Royal Mail are refusing to budge on that issue."

The Truth wrote
"However Royal Mail have invested in machines which will mean that they want them ulitised on a Saturday as well as Monday to Friday therefore the second wave of work wont be reaching your office till much later on everyday of the week but also on Saturday."

I could go on quoting you but you get the message.
Stop misleading the membership.
You do not know who or how many will be working untill 3.00pm or later.
You do not know how many will be working later on a saturday.
All you know is that HQ are terrified that this will be a dealbreaker and it is time to con the membership into believing they may be one of the lucky ones. :cuppa

Spot on fishtank.

This guy is always looking on the bright side - which is a crock of crap for those who will be working til 3 on Saturday and every day.

All this bullshit about change is necessary but it is more and more apparent that not everyone is going to be affected and at the time of voting for the agreement NO-ONE will know who is a "winner" and who a "loser". Too bloody late when you've agreed and find out the DO next to you are getting their mail 2 hours before you are and finishing two hours before you.

Hence the proposal that everyone starts at the same time and finishes at the same time - in that way there is UNITY and I see absolutely nothing to stop that happening.

You know that the probable outcome is that we will all be losers. Without RMC how would we know? the union nor CWU are going to tell us are they.

Fishtank I suggust you read the agreement. Now in terms of quoting me , well I have always stated that some offices and some walks will recieve their second batch earlier than others. The second 40% starts being sorted from around 0600 in the morning , so some offices will recieve theirs works earliers then others so the vast majority will be finish by 2 30 with most by 2.

So if for example 4 offices have their work done by the same sequencing machines then 3 of those offices should have their second batch of work by 0900 and as early as 7.30.

Remember each batch ( appox 12 walks ) have to go through 3 passes before being ready to despatch to the DO.

Chance would be a fine thing.
Is the agreement going to tell us when we will get our mail and consequently what time we will be finishing?
Or are we going to vote on a wing and a prayer?

4 offices? Sounds like my cluster. The bigger of the four D.O's is due to get a CSS in October 2011 unless RM decide to bring that date forward.

I don't care much for this "it will only affect the minority" attitude, thin end of the wedge as far as I'm concerned.
