Keeping dry....

Has anyone ever tried to make their stormproof jacket waterproof? i.e with wax or anything else.Or has anyone got any tips they want to pass on about keeping dry and warm.

Nikwax - two part treatment from outdoor pursuits shops such as Blacks or Milletts. A cleaner and a proofer for washing machine use. Works out at about £12 altogether but that should do you about 4 treatments. Get the one for breathable fabrics.

The Nikwax stuff supposed to be good. I've tried Goretex, and that doesn't work after a while either!
So, try the Nikwax route, but I think it works on the "laminates" inside the jacket, if the jacket has one.
This is the windproof/waterproof layer that is fitted, where the holes let through sweat and stop rain drop as they are larger, in a molecule sorta way.

There's so much stuff on the market, but most of it is "advertising hype" as far as I can see!

Don't use the stormcoat, they are the most useless item of clothing that I've seen, my fleece keeps the rain out better

My £10 umbro jacket keeps my warmer than the fleece and drier than the stormcoat.

During the cold weather the only RM uniform I wear is the shirt. Everything else they give just isnt up to the job.

Yes - use it yearly on my fellwalking kit so I thought I'd try it on the RM stormcoat and leggings - make sure you use the cleaner tratment before the proofer and remove any traces of other detergents from your washing machine - don't use a launderette because the machines are full of old soap film. Air drying gets the best result to set the proofing. The shoe treatments work well on canvas and suede trail shoes so should be good on the Caterpillar trainers we have at the moment (if you've been lucky enough to get them !!!)
