What is "ghost overtime"?

What is "ghost overtime"? Heard this phrase the other day - what is it? Is it a common practise? Is it legal?

It's when you put down 2hrs overtime for doing 30mins worth of work. Not that common anymore as the Royal mail penny pinching is at it's peak.

It is when you are allowed, or just do, claim more 'overtime' than the job actually takes. It's fraud which is sometimes sanctioned by a manager to clear the office. Not seen it in our place for ages as a sweetener. I have known staff be payed 12HR's overtime to do a prepped walk.

If however you, off your own back, claim more overtime than you took and you get caught, you'll be out.

If nobody want to do overtime then the manager will say I'll give you 2 1/2 hours for something that could take 1 hr.

the way i understood it is when someone gets paid to take something extra and then still gets finished within their normal duty time, or at least uses some of their normal duty time to take the extra.

Same principle. If you are claiming more than you need.

Its when you do 2 duties inside one duty & get paid full for both duties.

Like when you could do a first and second delivery on o/t.
You did them all in the one delivery but got paid for both.
They were good days.
Bring back ghost overtime.

Ghosting overtime= is doing overtime within your duty span,it's a form of bribery when a manager needs some thing done and has not got the staff to do it so as a way of getting it done is to offer someone a bit of O/T and turning a blind eye to the way it's done,ie,not taking meal breaks,giving a van over so they can get round a bit quicker and still get home before their duty is finished.Our office it's the brown nosier staff that come in early and that run about ,don't take meal breaks,waves to you as they go past on the way back to the office when you still have 2 bags to go, you know the type we have a whole raft of them in our place and it's no good saying to a manager about it because the same staff play football or cricket or spend a lot of their time in the managers office drinking coffee with them.

When we used to get 2hrs on a sat to clear gas bills and still be home by 8.30am, those were the days boys

Never heard that term before , but as other have said it was getting paid two hours working one . It was in another place another time or at least it seems that way now. It was standard pratice in the RM , you would get a set amount of time to do something and if it took you less , then that was time you made.

IE, you got given 2 hours to prep and deliver , half a delivery. If you took it out second time with you at 10.45 and finished at 1.30pm . Then you made time as you would be paid from when you finished at 12.35 till 2.35. Like I said that was how it worked , no one gave it a second thought.

Best one I had was when I got asked to do half a round on overtime, I said no at first but then my manager said I could book TEN yes TEN hours for it!!! Only took me 1.45hr kaaaachinnnggg!!!
