Unpaid Leave..

Post by Jenny Manchester »

I’m a bridesmaid at Wedding in April and it falls on a Saturday. I’m owed a day from January as my day off was New Years day just gone. All I’m afraid of is the staff shortage at my office they will refuse me that day off. The wedding is in Scotland, so its not about doing your duty then travel around the corner.
I’m told that because they owe me a day, it cannot be carried over till April. Is that right???

I’ve looked at the option of swapping days that week, but they are all miserable gits if you know what I mean, nobody will swap a Monday for Tuesday for a Saturday.
Another question . If the manager refused it, could I take a day off unpaid leave, or would it go down as sick.
Don’t want to phone in sick that morning. They are aware of it now…
We just seem to get penalised for things like this…

Cant really offer you any advice other than sympathise with you and tell you its just the same in our office... it is a disgrace that we cant book a day off even with a couple of months notice!
non of my friends and family believe me when i tell them i cant attend something cos i cant get the time off even months in advance, it really is best to just not worth asking for the time off and having a sicky

The only real guaranteed way to get it off is to pay someone to do the duty for you (and pay them in advance so they can't back out at the last minute  )

Been in similar situation myself a few times in the past wanting a leading saturday to a holiday.

Oh, and if you do find someone, make sure it is put in the Duty Swap Book for that day beforehand.

No, all owed days off i.e Bank holidays, Xmas day, New Years day etc that fall on your day off are add to your annual leave the same year. This should happen automatically. Ask you dom for a print out of your holiday entiltlement and there should be a box on it that says something like adjusted leave (cant quite remember the exact wording)

This owed day can then be taken anytime just like your normal leave.

You can normally carry over 5 days into the next holiday year April-April.

Ohhh and one more thing staff shortages is not your problem. You are entitled to your holidays!! Have a word with your union rep because I think four months notice for one days leave is more than enough!!

You can take normal leave anytime?

In my office your holidays are put up on a sheet. That's when you take them. No odd days off when you need them, no going on holiday with kids, and no carrying over anything.
