Holidays denied- always

Anyone else work in a delivery office that has been cut to the bare minimum, wi high sick absence, and constantly denied holidays?
Our boss is denying every single request for annual leave, as well as day off requests, and will continue to do so in the near future.
We have a guy whos due 23 days still, he went off sick this week, cause he cant get the week he wanted, he will come back still with 23 outstanding days, plus this week off, which he wanted.

The boss has a folder 2-3 incches thick wi requests, some have been in for 3 month plus--its f***ing crazy.

I have worked lots of places,Companies that had to make a profit and ran a 24 hrs 7 day a week service.
Never have I found a worse Company for Holidays than RM.
This year ,like always annual leave forsms for 2010-2011 were handed out in sept with a short time to be handed in.
We got our holiday forms back last week.
Is it no wonder sickness levels are so high, as trying to get leave is nr impossible,far worse now than ever before.
Trying to get a Saturday off in the summer is impossible.

Wait until they make Saturdays later and longer! They'll have people taking the day off sick because their team has a big game on, or because of a family wedding or some such event. People will look at their sick record and if it's good, they'll have the day off. RM will have to pay O/T for the cover, pay sick pay AND still owe a day's A/L.

A form goes up with your hols on, thats it. Don't like it? There's the door. A couple of times I've needed a day off, I've had to beg people to swap their day off with me.

Kids and Missus have been away without me two years running now.

when i have holiday denied I go and see the DOM myself and sit down and ask him to show me which weeks he has available for A/L , that way when I pick 1 of those weeks he has to grant it or give me a good reason as to why not

Will it mean the return of "casuals" in every DO!

We have just finished signing for our leave, just the odd days still to sign for...........Better than last year when we were still signing 2 weeks into April!

Our office has been cut to the bare minimum, in fact below it.. Constantly asking people to work their days off (god knows why people keep helping them out of the s**t), always absorbing because not enough staff to cover even with o/t. Leave picked around Christmas, odd days being picked now - if you're lucky. Tried to get some odd days off a while back, couldn't get what I wanted or even remotely near - most people have the same problem, it's a joke.

Our office is the same for single days owed. Im now on my 10th refusal. Even for weddings/funerals its a straight no. I phoned royalmail HR and was told by them to put in a greivance. The union is also now involved with others in our office in the same boat. We were giving 6-8 months notice for a few single days. Just shows how much of a mess this company is in.

Like many have said, I have to agree that this company is without doubt the worst I have ever worked for when it comes to getting time off. It makes me laugh when your day off coincides with a Bank Holiday and you're given the day off as time in lieu. I've lost count of the amount of times this has happened to me and not once have I been able to take a single day off when required without a fight and even then I've only been succesful once. It seems to me that a denial is automatically given as a matter of course but if you have the heart to 'kick up a fuss' it sometimes turns out that your request was possible after all. It seems it's just easier to say it isn't possible straight off the bat and then hope that you leave it at that.

Your contract states that you work x amount of hours per week. Your contract also states that you get x amount of holidays per year. Now, you can request to carry over 1 week with the agreement of the dom and in extreme circumstances you can carry over more than 1 week but it is to be given in writing and signed by both yourself and the dom.
However many people do not wish to carry over their contracted annual leave, so you put in writing asking for annual leave giving the dom at least 3 alternative dates. If he refuses then you bung in a grievance stating that you are being refused your contractual holidays. You can also write to ask.adam@royalmail.com stating your grievance about not being allowed to take your contractual annual leave. If you and others in your office who are in a similiar position do both then I guarantee that you will see annual leave being allowed as what the dom is doing is illegal.
Dont let it rest otherwise it will not get sorted out. We had this problem last year and a combination of both sorted it out plus you get to see your dom sweating as he has to ask if you will carry over your leave otherwise he cannot cover all the duties It was fun but it took grievances to get the fun. I asked for a week off recently as was told they are not fully booked they are over booked!!! So many rats have left the sinking ship there's no one left to do the walks now!
