Time to pick hoildays.

Post by Pickle »

On friday my DOM came to me and told me to pick a weeks leave. He said ive got another extra week to pick as im owed so many single days. I said i would have to see my wife first to check when she can take a week so were off at the same time. He came back to me yesterday and asked me to pick the week. I tried to explain that as my wife only works mon-fri that she has been unable to check what holidays she has left. I told him it would be monday that i could tell him the week i wanted. He then said as im holding up the annual leave sheet he would have to skip me and move on to the next person. We usually get 48hrs to pick out leave but he didnt want to know. My annual leave should be 4 weeks, but this year ive got 6 weeks & 4 days. Ive also now been refused days off for the 10th time running. You think hes taking the piss or does this happen else where.

AFAIUI - you can only carry holidays over from one year to the next with the say so of your DOM.
In RM this just seems to be the norm but I have never worked anywhere ( and I don't know anyone else who has ) where you can carry several weeks over.
If ever there was an indication of the chronic state of mismangement in RM this is it. If everyone in my DO was to take their outstanding holiday entitlement before the end of the financial year there would hardly be anyone left at work for the next 6 weeks.

Im gona go speak to my area rep tommorow. Theres a few of us in the same boat, having problems geting days that were owed. Even 6 months notice for a few days is a point blank NO. Last year was my wifes grans funeral. I was told to swap my day off, even though i had days to use. Its getting to be a joke. :arrrghhh

I have leave left too and asked for the last week of March off and was told no because we have no available leave slots left. So I have 10 days leave and no time to take them.
Where do you go from there???!!!

This is something we have gone to disagreement over in our DO, some guys have several weeks leave to be taken before April as this is end of leave year for everyone in RM, so if you cannot take all leave entitled you may at Dim,s discretion carry over only 1 week, but did you also know RM are entitled to not honour any extra leave outstanding and can "take " this away and that,s that!!!!
I personally think HQ and Area Reps need this sorted now as I see thing going to get much worse with longer spans and guys desperate to get some R&R on a regular basis.
By the way we have a rota system that spans 5yrs in our DO so I know which months my leave will fall, is ours the only office with this system? At least I can plan next years hols cos I off in June/July 2011 :Very Happy

The summer holiday period for this year is due to start on 26/4 and our holidays will not be confirmed until next week.

Surely if Royal Mail will not roll over leave left, and are stating that your leave will be lost, then by their own admission, you are entitled to take them before the end of this holiday year, and it is the management,s duty to find the cover, not deny you the holiday because they are unable to carry out their management duty.

I was told I had 2 weeks holiday to take in my first 6 months

I've had two 5 day holidays.

Is that 2 weeks or is it 14 days?
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

We had a disagreement last year about this time and we found out that you can carry over more than 1 weeks a/l but it must be agreed by both sides and a letter stating this signed again by both sides. If your dom is not interested in carrying over your leave in this manner or if you want your holidays then take them. Your holidays are in your contract and if they dont allow you to take your holidays within the financial year then they are in breach of contract just as you would be if you refused to work for a week without any valid reason. We had so much a/l in our office that a lot of staff agreed to carry their a/l over into this year. Dont let them get away with stopping your contractual holidays. Put in a grievance with the threat of going much higher as you dont want to lose your a/l but do it soon otherwise RM could possibly say that you have shown no interest in your outstanding a/l
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Our DOM will carry over a/l no probs. Thats the problem. Its been goin on like this for so long & the amount of cuts thats been made. Its the managment who have caused this problem, but once again we have to deal with it.

It's also unlawful for RM not to give you at least 4 weeks leave in the year, unless you
agree in writing to waive your right to it, under the Working Time Regulations.
