Peak Oil and Royal Mail
Has anyone informed Royal Mail about Peak Oil,and its consequenses.I just feel we are all being led by real world deniers, incapable of Modernizing their economic and political outlook. There is an article on the BBC Buisiness page that adresses this economic reality,ad should be shown to those at the moment engaged in "moderization" talks both Management and Union.I relate this subject to the current Park and Loop phenomenen that seems to be some thirty years out of sinque with what is happening in the real world.Has Royal mail agreed an exeption certificate from "World Leaders" concerning Co2 emissions,do they not realise that the entire mail service is part of what is happening in the world, and by junketing the only true Green and Flexible mode of transport, capable of covering great distances, with load, and no emmisions is the bike, followed by shankses pony, please can someone say to these industrial dinosaurs the king has no clothes, and wake up to what peak oil means,to transport costs and delivery costs, without the cost to the environment. Union Man.

Reason: Personal term removed as it did not add to the argument and would have started a flame war. Debate don't insult

Re: Peak Oil and Royal Mail
I disagree about it being nonsense although I am on the fence about it, those splinters are uncomfortable.fmrPOSTIE wrote:Man made global warming is a nonsense.
It just seems common sense to me that there must be a consequence of so much pollution and large worldwide population.
Whether or not it has been proved beyond a reasonable doubt either way with regard to Global warming I don't think it has been proved or disproved and I hope I am open minded about.
Worst case scenario if the deniers are wrong is we spend money we can ill afford to but the world and the human race carries on as before.
Worst scenario if the pro global warming lobby are correct and we do nothing, is extinction of some species, increase in weather events and disasters and possibly wars over the resources that are left.
I would rather err on the side of caution, be wrong but take steps to mitigate an unproven theory, rather than discount it and find out too late that the doom sayers were right.

Re: Peak Oil and Royal Mail
I would hazard a guess that the PR department of RM have already thought about this, and would use the argument that they are taking other environmental measures which overall reduces their carbon footprintUnion Man wrote:Has anyone informed Royal Mail about Peak Oil,and its consequenses.I just feel we are all being led by real world deniers, incapable of Modernizing their economic and political outlook. Don't ask me what they are though, as I say just a ( somewhat cynical) guess

Vehicles
Our target: reduce transport-related CO2 emissions by 20%.
We have 33,415 vehicles which travel a total of around 610 million miles each year, consuming approximately 140million litres of fuel. We’re constantly looking for ways to reduce the impact of this fleet. For example, between 2003 and 2008 the road transport element of our mail operation’s CO2 emissions reduced by 13.4%. During the same period, the CO2 emissions related to air and rail transports reduced by 11.5%.
We’ve installed special technology in around 8,000 vans and trucks to help us operate them more efficiently. This will potentially reduce our carbon output by 7,000 tonnes and save 2.5 million litres of diesel in 2009.
We’ve also invested in a fleet of more than 300 double-deck trailers. These can transport 50% more mail than conventional trucks and therefore cut down on mileage. We estimate that the first 50 double deck-trailers have reduced annual mileage by 1.98 million miles, saving 3,175 tonnes of CO2 each year.
Looking ahead, alternative fuels have a big part to play in reducing CO2 emissions. To date, we’ve trialled and evaluated a range of alternatives to petrol and diesel – including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), hybrid and electric. We’ll keep you up to date with progress.
We’re also training our drivers to be more safety and environmentally conscious, to help reduce fuel consumption.
Sounds good doesn't it.

Re: Peak Oil and Royal Mail
For anyone not sure what Peak OIl theory is all about it's basically the idea that global oil production will follow the pattern show on an individual oil wells output graph. There you will see a 'Peak' on the graph where the well reaches it's maximum output before dropping off as quickly as it went up.
As you can see from this chart, global peak might not be that far away (depends on possible new discoveries) and could be here already!
If you think about what will happen when total world oil production hits the peak and starts to decline, it's a bit scary. The price of oil will enter an ever increasing slope and within a few years petrol could concievably be 10times more expensive than now. Food will be too as every calorie of food need 4 calories of oil to produce and get to market. When we get to that situation the new fleet of vans will be next to worthless as will most of our jobs. Society will crumble and war over resources will be universal. PREPARE OR DIE!

Yes, head-to-toe leather will help in the comming crisis as will a sawn-off shotgun because letting people know you are one bad-ass mofo who won't take no s**t will be a positive. On the negative side all your family and friends will have been killed by crazed motor-cycle gangs and Tina Turner will be the local law maker.

Peak oil: a warning from Richard Branson
Richard Branson has told David Strahan of Global Public Media that the world's oil supplies may peak within just six years.
He's by far the most prominent and - as somebody who runs an airline - well-placed figure to have warned about peak oil, to the best of my knowledge. In four or five years' time, he predicted, "fuel prices will go through the roof".
Last week I posted my concern that climate scientists have undermined the green cause by overstating their case here and there. Climate sceptics in the blogosphere have interpreted my post as some kind of semi-official retreat by The Times generally from belief in man-made climate change.
Branson's interview makes clear that the debate about climate science is only part of the story - and provides support to those who believe we must conserve energy regardless of what the climate models tell us.
Only last week, the British regulator Ofgem warned of energy shortages to come, with blackouts and renationalisation of the energy industry. Does Branson's comment suggest that the era of aviation is, give or take the odd flight on biofuels, at an end?
