Today I was faced with a situation where I had 5 packets for one address and 4 packets for an address on the same road. All nine packets, along with the mail would not fit in a pouch. I decided to take the bundle of four packets and put the bundle of five packets out for the van driver to deliver. I thought this solution was very reasonable so continued to prep. my delivery. Shortly after my anager approached me with the bundle of five packets and proceeded to demand I delivered them. I explained I did not have adequate capacity in my pouch and told him not only was I not going to take the bundle of five packets but because of his attitude I was now not going to deliver the bundle of four packets either. Shortly after I was invited along with a witness into the managers office where I was threatened with suspension on the grounds of, “not obeying a reasonable request” if I did not deliver all nine packets.

On the paperwork which explains how the packets templets are to be used it states on the “Other Considerations” section of the document.
“Size although key is not the only factors that need to be accounted for. Other issues also need to be taken onto consideration when determining the best method for delivering packets:

Multiple packets to a single address. Although the individual packets may fall within the size and weight guidelines a volume of packets to the same address may cause volume or weight problems on the delivery.”

Because I was very stressed and because I was operating under the threat of suspension I decided to deliver all nine packets under duress.

I looked in the york where the packets for the van drivers are sorted into and there was a bundle of three packets, which were put out for the van driver ,from round 25. The posterson who delivers round 25 was not threatened with suspension???????????

Could you please advise me of your opinion on this issue.

The driver is being an arse. Sounds like he has singled you out. An over reaction from the manager, imo.

I took three or four sets of multiple small packets for one address today. I don't know why some drivers make such a big deal.

The driver is an asss he should have taken the packets and the manager should have made him. Most of the drivers in our office are reasonable, but we do have one that wont take any parcels unless he has to go to that road with a huge one. His favourite excuses are that if it fits in a bag you should take it (even if it will only fit in an empty bag with no mail in it) or its "only a light day". If its only a light day for posties then its only a light day for drivers but this arguement just baffles him. Luckily we have a decent line manager, if there is any dispute now we just give parcels to him and he decides... and this is normally against the driver who doesn't understand its his job to take them

and request a prearranged meet at a specific time otherwise you don't think you will be able to complete. Of course it would be coincidence that you would be outside the addresses concerned.

personally think you were slightly out of order, it was a reasonable request after all. just as it would have been completely reasonable for you to then advise him that as your were reasonably accepting them and didnt have enough room, you would be reasonably leaving them in your pouch box and then when you had enough room in your pouch you would reasonably dead walk back to the pouch box, then reasonably deliver them and if because you were being reasonable in delivering them, you couldnt reasonably finish your complete delivery on time and as such it would be reasonable to cut off and you could reasonably expect him to arrange someone else who was also quite reasonable to deliver the cut off,

they can ask me to do whatever they want within reason, i aint over filling bags, i aint rushing which could cause accident, i aint working over time, any work they want me to do in that time is fine, if a packet driver refuses something which is over template size and the dom asks/tells, as long as it is not too heavy and fits in my pouch i will deliver it, even if its the only thing that fits as a result i will try my best but not an inch more!

That is sadly true. However with the introduction of Park and Loop every packet will be a driver's packet and all stuck up drivers will be returned to walking postmen.

Some drivers can be right idiots. I've put packets out for van delivery as I didn't have enough room only to be told by the driver that it's 'too small'.
When I told them I'd have to make up another bag, I'm met with the usual reply 'I'd rather drop a bag of than a packet'. Even though you can drop a packet off at any time, you'd rather have to come drop a bag off to me at a specfic time, thus breaking you off your delivery?

Just picking up on a comment above regarding 'If it's an easy day on foot, it's an easy day for the drivers'.

Not true, not where I work, anyway. Mondays are usually very light, but the rest of the week you just don't know until you get in. For example, Wednesday this week was reasonable for the foot deliveries, but I had the most Special Deliveries and Tracked I've ever known (more than at any time during Christmas pressure) and the ordinary packets were heavy too. Why this should be I've no idea, because it was pretty normal the rest of the week.

Also in my office, the worst day for us drivers is Tuesday, because we do 'longs and shorts', Tuesday being a short. It is quite difficult to complete on time, and even more difficult to explain to the DOM that it isn't an easy day for us, despite that being the case for the walks, so no we can't absorb!

Go for a timed bag as close to a collection time as you can.

Multi packets are drivers simple as and we wonder why theres a divide.

But then on the other hand if a lot of posties didnt take the wee wee things would be alot easier for us walkmen.

I was a driver its one of the crappest jobs in R/M i wouldnt advise anyone to take up a driving duty.

Management think cos your in a van you can go hear there and every where at the drop of a hat.

Lastly get your rep onto it and get a written agreement drew up quoting the packet template guidelines.

If it still cant be resolved that way take it down the I/R frame work then your DOM will sort it out.

They hate anythink going down the I/R frame work .
