CAR DERIVED VAN DELIVERIES

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

I am going to start a war here but I have been thinking about Park and Loops.

I actually think that if handled correctly by Royal Mail (Yes I Know their track record), taking into account local conditions, work load, parking restrictions, human interaction etc..... . They could actually be good for the Posties:

Drawbacks or issues that need sorting

Will you get on with the person you are teamed up with.
Splitting workload between Driver and non driver
Prep work
Vehicle checks
Overnight responsibility
Size of Loops
Bodily needs
Work Load and balance
Cutting off procedure (single and team)
Wilful delay responsibility
Driver responsibility when there are 2 drivers.

But there are benefits.

No guessing on weather and either getting wet through or too warm because you guessed wrong.
Somewhere to have a break or shelter in really bad weather
A refuge or means of escape from dogs/irate customer.
Somewhere to store extra clothing, food, warm/cold drink and snacks
Better service for customers in that no longer waiting for 48 hours to collect.
No waiting on bags if your at end of drivers routes.
Packet deliveries will have more knowledge of customers and their idiosyncrasies.
Somewhere warm when its really cold.

As with most things in life there are drawback and benefits to this method of delivery -

Ducks head and waits for replies. :Very Happy :Very Happy

This is one thing that concerns me about this system, also the differences in walking speed etc all become issues!
Overnight responsibility
Eh?? Surely the vans will be returned to the office at the end of every day, without question? I wouldn't even consider anything else, use the companies time and facilities not your own driveway and associated risks leaving a company vehicle (with packets?) open to theft.
Prep work, Vehicle checks, Size of Loops, Cutting off procedure
In my office where they are thinking about bringing them in, it's the little things like this that have been ignored or disregarded as unimportant. I get the feeling our DOM wishes to keep duties the same but just bring vans in and everything will be fine.. :d'oh!
But there are benefits.
I would agree with all the benefits you list. In some ways I wish they would bring them in as it would make my life easier.

linkinpark wrote:Some good points there but to the bad points i would add that most packet duties will go and they are mostly full time i would think the cost over a period of time would become prohibitive fuel maintance insurance ect. the carbon footprint issue that will be taxed to the max in the near future by Government and last but not lrast when it goes t*ts up we will have to pay for it in cuts in pay terms and conditions.
In full agreement with your points, but still think if the CWU Head Shed handle it right it could be of some benefit to us. I certainly hope that they have thought of the same drawbacks I have, and hopefully more, but with no direct current experience of deliveries I doubt it. Being told what the experience is one thing, experienceing it on a day to day basis is an entirely different matter.

Some offices, mine in particular, don't have enough parking spaces if we went CDV and from what Dingo has posted previously they are looking at "Take Homes" to make it work. Packets being left in the Van after you have finished work and taken it home, is already covered in the "Integrity of Mail" documents.

Surely the greatest benefit in both the short term and the long term will be getting those bloody bags off our backs.
And while I can see problems with working in pairs, surely on the whole it will be better to have a colleague close by in case of any problems.

vans cost on average £6000 a year all in that's buying them, tax, ins, fuel ect ect A full time duty with day off cover, holiday cover will be well over £25000. Do the maths vans are coming.

Trouble is you won't get the weight off your back. We have a small number of Park and Loops since our last revision. As they will only let us have one PDA per van and one set of keys it means that one poor soul spends all his time delivering mail whilst the driver does specials, large items and some mail. Whilst the driver is off delivering his specials etc... guess what, you get a nice heavy bag of mail to do whilst he's gone. At the times when the driver is delivering as well, because you've only got one set of keys you need to try and make sure you both take about the same amount of work. So in reality you both end up taking a bag of mail. The only way you will get weight off your shoulder is if you use one of the useless golf trolleys

Any extension of the delivery time MUST be accompanied by a serious effort to remove the weight from our shoulders.
I understand why you do what you do and I have seen others post the same on here, but the van isn't just supposed to be a mobile drop box.
We must ensure that if/when Park and Loop is introduced that we get as much advantage from it as possible.
If they ban private cars on delivery then they should ban bags on shoulders as well.

Nice idea ccr but it will never happen.
You see park&loop was designed for two drivers end of story.
It does not and will not work with a non-driver.
Unless that non- driver takes more mail than the driver.
This is just a fudge solution that suits no-one.

Won't be happening at our office, there is going to be a ban on parking cars in the car park, so the idea is you take van home and drop off/pick up your 'buddy' every day. Why would you need to worry about packets getting nicked from the van in your driveway when you would take the undelivered items back to the office everyday as you do now

Looks like I'll be using an HCT close to the office then.
Hope they sort out the issue of security while I disappear up a tenement for a few minutes.

What about for example, a postie on a walk for 20 years plus and RM comes to him/her one day and tells him /her that he/she will be doing vanshare from now on just because he has a driving licence. Is it possible or reasonable for RM to do this?

The plan is before it kicks off to take you in for a one to one meeting.
One of the questions asked will be "Do you want to be a driver or non driver"
Being a non-driver though will seriously limit your choices in a repick.
