Given the deteriorating state of the environment I find it really disturbing delivering junk mail. Whatever arrives in my own letterbox gets recycled immediately. Whenever I buy Radio Times, the first thing I do is hold it up by its cover and empty all the junk straight into the recycling bin. I have a sign on my door saying No Junk Mail. Recycling is just the tip of the iceberg that needs to be done. I may not do much for the environment, but I do try to work towards a better relationship with it. Yet as a postman, delivering D2Ds, I become an active polluter. I hate doing this. And all of us together pollute massively - tons and tons and tons every day!
Do we have to deliver D2Ds? Is there a legal basis for this? Does anyone know whether we have the right to refuse? What would happen if we said, I'm doing this for the environment, and refused to deliver D2Ds?

Junk mail in my opinion is anything that doesn't have an address on.

At last, someone who agrees with me on this. Junk mail is anything that people do not ask for and which goes straight into the bin. There are a number of euphemisms for it: "unsolicited mail", "unaddressed mail", "d2d", "household" and one I heard on radio 4 this week, "discretionary mail". It's all rubbish and it should be illegal, and whatever Royal Mail or the union say about it, a mail company that relies on it for their profit is failing in its business. We should be starting a campaign to have it banned. If you don't know the name of a person living in a house you shouldn't be shovelling mail through their letterbox. Period. The union should be fighting for a proper living wage for its members without the need to fall back upon this antisocial and environmentally damaging trade.
