I'd be interested in knowing - my wife suffers with panic and anxiety attacks, and while it has not happened yet ( touch wood ) she might call me in great distress & I might need to get to her asap - I don't want or need to worry about my job security at the same time!

I would say that individual circumsatances and common sence would have to be decussed first with your dom.
1, how far from the delivery office do you live and would you be able to stay at home until further assistance from family or friends arrive, then continue with your delivery.
2, asking your dom whether this family friendly suggestion above will also cover you from being off route, not unless the delivery round your doing is were you live then this will not be an issue.
3, asking colleagues to assist you in your hour of need.
4, phone Bobby Gibson's office (CWU HQ postal outdoor) I assume you work in deliveries.
5, phone HR 08456060603 and explain your issues
6, phone welfare.
7, your hours could be moved to assist you futher.
8, if however your situation is that the emergency is a continious one then maybe you should consider contacting Social Services for home care.
9, your area rep could do more

I could go on with various possibilities however not knowing your personal situation, one can only guide. Remember though Royal Mail is a huge business and your dom don't know much, they only know what there managers want them to know thats why there muppets.

your rep is an idiot, i have taken my mail out on delivery before and been ill and had to send it back, I had my grandmother die while on delivery and have to go home. What i did was not ask royal mail if I can go home but TELL THEM. I phoned my driver to come pick up my bags and then i phoned my line manager and informed him i had an emergency and all my bags are on the drivers van and I was going home. You are not a kid you dont ask permission to go home you are your own judge if something is serious you can go home.

I have to agree this is crap!! Its the same process as if you have an injury on duty but going off the above statement if you fall a break your leg you have to complete you round!

phone the office speak to PHG/Manager explaint the situation then its upto them to cover you duty
if no manager present get the PHG to write it down so your covered!

Not bothered about the attendance procedure tbh, just the fact I may get hit with willfull delay.

If your area rep is correct then ask him why the agreed procedure as outlined in the "OVERRUNNING DELIVERIES OPG NOTIFICATION PROCEDURE - HOW TO FIX GUIDELINES - FOR DELIVERY UNITS - UK OPERATIONS" says

3.2 AFTER COMMENCEMENT OF DELIVERY

a) If an individual is prevented from completing their delivery for any reason, it is essential that this is reported immediately either by returning to the office or by telephone (telephone costs will be refunded). A written record will be kept.

b) All employees should be informed of the local authorised arrangements, in writing, preferably in plastic card form if available.

Same thing here my Mum died 4 years ago when I was on delivery, I got the phone call left the mail in the pouch box rung the office and went simple as that.
Nobody on earth would have stopped me and if they had tried god help them.

I can't see a court in the land doing you for willful delay if you had to leave mail in an emergency.
If they even tried it with me I'd be off to the press. Especially if it was something really bad like close family dying.

I normally look at things as if I owned a business and what would i do if a situation arrouse with an employee, however this is why common sense is ruled out with royal mail and this is why we have unions and the grievance procedure and the H1 form.
