Do as we say or F**K off

We had an area rep in today due to a lot of disgruntled people getting pissed of at the union telling us what we can and cant do. The long and short of it was he told us........" you tow the union line or you can f**k off". and we won't represent you if you get any stage's ect. you either back us 100% or not at all. way to go CWU

And whats new? Same as strikes surely. Tow the line or go multiply. One for all etc.

Get what you pay for though.

Do you mean TOE the line as in stand on it and don't cross, rather that attach it to something and TOW it away. Although I do prefer the 2nd solution if I don't agree with a policy. :Very Happy :Very Happy :Very Happy :Very Happy

Would that be the same strikes that were ratified in a secret ballot of the membership?

Sorry but we need details here! We can all say this that and the other but if any area REP came to our office and said that pile of sh*t he would likley get filled in. You may well be telling the truth i dont know? PM your office details to the Moderators for confirmation from their sources other wise keep that cr*p to yourself cause I DONT BELIEVE IT! I have many probs with our Union but that steaming pile aint One of em!

Have to agree linkin,I can't see any area rep having the balls to come out with that.
As well as putting his position on the line he would likely be putting his life on the line as well.
However i will keep an open mind as some things that have gone on lately have been surprising to say the least.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Our last ADR came over to my DO when we were getting ready to walk over Peagsus a couple of years back. The ADR said "we have to accept it and work with them, if we have an input we can control it" - Strangely the next election he was voted out (he did not get a single vote from our unit AFAIK) and our rep was voted in as his successor. :dance :dance :dance :dance

Correcting grammatical errors rather than focusing on the point is laughable considering the content of most pages but there we go. The point is, this is why so many loath the union. It just goes too far at times and I'm not the only one who feels the CWU has done this too often, taken workers nowhere and at times made a right mess of things. You may sing the praises of the brotherhood but I don't. Instead of condemning people who don't support the CWU you might wonder why the union is losing so many members and why that has meant subs have gone up.

As far as I'm concerned, the CWU has been dead a long while and mostly self-interested these days.

Touchy aren't we - it was meant as a light-hearted way of putting my view point across - Lighten Up and join in the banter instead of sniping away all the time - please.

Neither do I - if you check my posting history you will see have questioned and supported both Royal Mail and the CWU (and other bodies) as and when I think they deserve both.

To slavishly accept any viewpoint, no matter who it comes from, without question helps no-one, neither does the opposite of always criticising and failing to accept valid arguments or positions from any another person, organisation or political persuasion than those you agree with. I am not accusing you of any of this but I have always felt that a closed mind is a wasted mind.

And an open mind is a mark of foolishness (Chesterton - I think)
Maybe best to just leave it ajar?

:hmmmm ............... :left: :left: :left: :left: :left:

and yes it was Chesterton and there are 2 quotes:

"An open mind is really a mark of foolishness, like an open mouth. Mouths and minds were made to shut; they were made to open only in order to shut." (Illustrated London News. October 10, 1908)

"The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid." (Autobiography. Collected Works Vol. 16, p. 212)

Your not going to like what i say now so i shall brace myself for the backlash.

I totally agree with your area REP its about time the union started to get strong with it members WHY? when your a union offical and you have to go into negoatiations more times than not just when you thought you have reached an agreement the members your representing blow your arguing points clean out the water. At the same time you have the members moaning at you, when you explain to them its your fault for doing X.Y & Z and not doing A,B &C they go all quite and slip away.

The union is only as strong as it members but some think the union can wave a magic wond and every think is going to be fine, well sadly its not . Not until the members of the CWU start doing the job properly.

Heres a little senario we had in our office for the first time in my 14 years service we took back in august 4 days un-offical action during that action we all decided that it was now time for us all to start doing the job properly so it was agreed by near enough a 100 staff. We had one member of staff who continued to use there car each time eye talked to them and they lied saying they would stop using it the following day. In the end the i lost patience with the constant lies and informed the person that i would no longer represent them there wasnt one member of staff who disagreed with my actions ,i also informed the branch of my decision. In R/M theres is an attitude of im alright jack if there doing that then im doing this. Its pathetic grown adults need to take responseability for there own actions if that means the union have to get tough with its members than so be it .

I will say that the union have made some silly mistakes and made agreements that were basically crap and im hoping this time around were going to get a good deal.
For 1 month for those of you that arnt doing the job properly give it a try you never know what you will get out of it. We got back 4 walks and a driving duty so proof it does have an impact.

Unfortunately the ones that cry the loudest about this and think that the union are out of order are usually the ones flying around and dont give a toss about the long term effects of there actions. It is because of the way we have been doing the job for years that we now find ourselves in the position we are in today.

How many meeting in your canteen have you sat in on and your rep or area rep has stood in front of you and said if you dont do the job properly this is going happen and we all sart back and thought yet what ever. Well if we all would have listened and started doing what they asked we wouldnt be were we are, and thats the simple facts. Dont blame the union for how the job it is our fault. Now pleae dont think i just bow down to my union as i dont i do what i feels right taken into account what they have said. I am on the verge of jacking in my union if longer del spans are agreed but being on the front line so speak casts a whole new light on things as allways there are two sides to every argument.

linkinpark wrote:No back lash from me Brother! I agree, but what was said said was "tow the Union line or we wont represent you if you get any stage's ect!" What you are saying is right after a fashion but our REPS cant say they wont represent us on stages if we dont follow their rules thats bang out of order in my book! The fact that the CWU are p*ss poor at communicating to its own members about what they have forced us to agree to is an HQ problem and then to have someone go in heavy handed and say if you dont tow the line you wont get representation on other things is wrong in my book. Now every thing is a bit suspect about this post to me and to the best of my knowledge it has not been confirmed as true so i still think its false! BUT REPS dont decide what why and whom they represent THEY REPRESENT EACH AND ALL CWU MEMBERS TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY END OFF! If an office has an education problem its upto area div HQ to identify and sort ASAP. WE ARE THE UNION AND IF IT WORKS FOR SOME IT MUST WORK FOR ALL!
I have no idea as to whether the post is true or not, but I do know our rep has gone along the same lines with anyone he feel's is not TOWING his version of the line. He has not answered his phone when certain people have tried to contact him and he told us that he was not prepered to accompany people that don't want to strike to any stage's ect. so much for a democratic union.

As a rep you are obligied to represent everyone that is a member when i informed the person in my office i would not represent them i did make it clear to them if they needed union assistance they could at any time ask me for the area reps number and i would more than happily pass it on. To be honest they were scare tactics and i was hoping the person would have a change of heart but they didnt .

I had the staff on my case about it they were threating to go back to there old ways of working and after losing 4 days solid pay i had to try somethink to please the majority right or wrong that was the road i chose to go down.

I agree with everythink you said link.

I think what is wrong here is if a rep puts his own interpretation on it he can not make the rules up and be the judge juror and executionier of the members.

Ive never came across a area rep that has ever stood in front of its members and said the alleged comments so ill take it as false seen as were coming up to the 22 jan i think were about to hear more bad stories about local/area/divisonal reps a form of propaganda i think.
