attacked by a dog today
it rushed out the door when the owner came out. I didnt pay much notice b cos it was a small jack russell type. Next thing it grabbed my leg. I pushed it off then it came back bit my boot and snow chain. I shouted at The 2 women, its biting me but they looked lost and kept saying sorry. They finally got the lead pulled it away. Fortunately the dog didnt get through my trousers or cut me. I rang my office, the manager said they'll write to the owner and they'll have to collect their mail. Now what if i defended myself when the dog bit me by kicking or stamping on it? Would i be in the wrong? The 2 owners could not control it. If i seriously injured it wld i be in trouble? I was told the small dogs r the worse

I wouldn't worry about the incident except that you're not allowed to kick/hit/stamp a dog just because you're annoyed/scared.

Re: attacked by a dog today
I am afraid you would be wrong to kick out at such a small dog as you would prob cause a bad injury. I know it seems wrong and is frustrating (been bitten more times that I can rem) but it would look quite poor in retrospect.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

You could be leaving yourself wide open to prosecution for causing unnecessary suffering under the Protection of Animals Act 1911.

Re: attacked by a dog today
Around 6 months ago i was also attacked by a small jack russel dog, i was delivering a parcel and the woman just opened the door so i ran off a bit but the dog caught my leg and then started jumping up at me. i was scared so i kicked it my hardest in its head it cried n went off and i delivered the parcel with the woman crying and i said sorry but your dog deserved the kick to the head i just gave it with my size 8 magnum boots. i found out a few days later she had to have the dog put down, i smiled and every time i deliver now i am grateful that this stupid dog will not stand behind the letterbox hoping for me to slip a nice finger inside it to chew off. Having done 23 years on the job and been attacked numerous times and bitten twice in that time, nothing serious unlike some of our poor colleagues who end up in hospital, I know how it feels. I will usually shout at the mutt keeping eye contact and fronting the beast and put the delivery pouch in front of me, usually works especially as i have a big mouthmatt3c wrote:Around 6 months ago i was also attacked by a small jack russel dog, i was delivering a parcel and the woman just opened the door so i ran off a bit but the dog caught my leg and then started jumping up at me. i was scared so i kicked it my hardest in its head it cried n went off and i delivered the parcel with the woman crying and i said sorry but your dog deserved the kick to the head i just gave it with my size 8 magnum boots. i found out a few days later she had to have the dog put down, i smiled and every time i deliver now i am grateful that this stupid dog will not stand behind the letterbox hoping for me to slip a nice finger inside it to chew off. I'm not advocating violent retaliation, as my first plan of action usually works for me but bear in mind the number of posties who are badly injured by these insane mutts, strike first dam the legal consequences later, maybe these inadequate owners should take care with their nutty pets in the first place

I'm sorry but if a dog physically attacks me, then I have a right to protect myself the best I can, so if I have to kick or punch, that is my right.

What kind of a callous git are yousure, you didn't deserve to be annoyed by the dog but causing an injury to it that caused it to be put down (and then being so happy about it) makes you even lower than one of those bullying managers IMHO.

A large dog may lunge for your throat. Protect this area of your body first and foremost with your arm tucked into your throat as far as you can without pulling back.
Punch the dog on the nose as hard as you can. Twist or pull the dog's ears. The dog's eyes are another soft spot which you should attack if required to defend yourself. Another stregy is to kick the dog in the rib cage. This will wind it and could stun it enough to ward off any more attacks. Yell for help.
If you frequently encounter stray or aggressive dogs, pepper spray or electronic whistles (adjusted at a frequency to cause dog's extreme discomfort) are inexpensive and excellent safeguards against dog attack.
And then on July 17, 2007 from Reese Blade:
"Just to mention friendly advice as you say below you receive email's advising on this topic , I volunteer for a self defense class my kick boxing instructor teaches (I'm the dummy ) animal attacks have been brought up as in or city street trash (homeless kids , punks degenerates) adopt violent dogs and use them to intimidate people or businesses from making them move on from loitering (and of course police can aresst them for that) anyway's most dogs will look for an easy bite something to grab and take at if your gonna be bitten anyway's you you have the choice where , feed them your lower arm preferably your left or lesser arm , and if you have a jacket or even a heavy shirt wrap it around your arm first , usually most people are found at a stand off with the dog before the attack and do have time to plan there next move but don't know what to do so they run , if not the case and a dog gets your arm , force it in to their mouth , a dogs teeth generally face inwards and this will not only hurt less than pulling away when you push it in the have to open their mouth to adjust their bite , but don't pull back yet hold them there if a dogs mouth is forced all the way opened it cant bit or breath , they cant breath well threw your arm and their nose's don't work to well open , hold its head so it cant back off if it pulls away it will just take another bite force your arm in as hard as you can and hold the dog their until someone helps you it already has its teeth in as long as you don't let go the worst is over (sorry for the lengthy feedback , hope this helps)."

f the dog is still a threat and attacks, avoid wildly kicking or punching it. This is because a dog that latches on isn’t going to easily let go, no matter how hard you hit him. In one case, a large dog was struck on the head with a baseball bat and still maintained his grip, so manpower alone won’t be successful.
Although running away or lashing out are instinctual reactions, it’s important to reign these in; they will antagonize the dog and lessen your chances of survival or getting away unscathed.

Why don't RM do proper training against dog attacks ??

Re: attacked by a dog today
Protect yourself yes but kick a small dog in the head no, I've been bitten by all types of dogs but I've never felt the need to kick the dog (the owner yes but not the dog), all you are is a bully and an animal abuser, and shame on you for thinking it's humourous.delboy wrote:I'm sorry but if a dog physically attacks me, then I have a right to protect myself the best I can, so if I have to kick or punch, that is my right.

Small scars that you ignore after a couple of days or killing someones pet and then thinking it's funny is totally beyond any sort of self defence (I've been bitten by all sorts of dogs and have never felt that way but maybe that's because I'm actually a human and not some sort of callous scroat).exreppdo wrote:and the alternative is to get mauled with permanant injuriesDGP1 wrote:matt3c wrote:Around 6 months ago i was also attacked by a small jack russel dog, i was delivering a parcel and the woman just opened the door so i ran off a bit but the dog caught my leg and then started jumping up at me. i was scared so i kicked it my hardest in its head it cried n went off and i delivered the parcel with the woman crying and i said sorry but your dog deserved the kick to the head i just gave it with my size 8 magnum boots. i found out a few days later she had to have the dog put down, i smiled and every time i deliver now i am grateful that this stupid dog will not stand behind the letterbox hoping for me to slip a nice finger inside it to chew off. Re: attacked by a dog today
the mutt grabbed my foot and was swinging from. Due 2 the weather i had on thick denims and tracksuit bottoms underneath which saved me from it piercing my skin. I do not believe that if u r attacked by a dog u cannot protect yr self by kicking or hitting ht. What if it is a bigger dog like an alsatian, bull terrier or rotty? U can't kick them off u 2 prevent them lock jawing yr leg off? Or u must wait till the owner pulls it off, then report it to the police and argue it should b putt down bcos its out of control by the owner? May try 2 get a dog spray or high pitch alarm siren. Final point to all dog lovers/owners, is it possible to train a dog so it knows the difference between a real intruder and a postie/genuine visitor? Or they will go for all and sundry cos of their instincts?

Re: attacked by a dog today
Some of our colleagues have a lot more than small scars that can be ignored, they are permanent my friend, both physical and mental. I have dealt with severe dog bite cases in my years as a rep and they are not nice for the recipient or their families who see their loved ones suffer. I do not find it funny whatsoever that a dog had to be destroyed and appreciate to the owner they are a part of their family. Like wise I do not think it is acceptable we have to put up with the menace that these animals present to us whilst we are carrying out our jobs. We have enough to endure as it is. It's healthy to share opinions on here and let off steam but because one does not agree with another there is no need to use callous scroat as a descriptive term.DGP1 wrote:Small scars that you ignore after a couple of days or killing someones pet and then thinking it's funny is totally beyond any sort of self defence (I've been bitten by all sorts of dogs and have never felt that way but maybe that's because I'm actually a human and not some sort of callous scroat).exreppdo wrote:and the alternative is to get mauled with permanant injuriesDGP1 wrote:matt3c wrote:Around 6 months ago i was also attacked by a small jack russel dog, i was delivering a parcel and the woman just opened the door so i ran off a bit but the dog caught my leg and then started jumping up at me. i was scared so i kicked it my hardest in its head it cried n went off and i delivered the parcel with the woman crying and i said sorry but your dog deserved the kick to the head i just gave it with my size 8 magnum boots. i found out a few days later she had to have the dog put down, i smiled and every time i deliver now i am grateful that this stupid dog will not stand behind the letterbox hoping for me to slip a nice finger inside it to chew off. Re: attacked by a dog today
I think you really need to read the original post that has caused this, the postie had a dog jump up at his leg which scared him and he thought that it was reasonable to kick a dog so hard that it had to be put down and then he laughs at the thought everytime he delivers to that house, that to me is a callous scroat and I can't see any reasonable person disagreeing with me. If the dog had of mauled him (or even bitten him) then that would be different but it didn't and that makes him lower than pondlife. Some of our colleagues have a lot more than small scars that can be ignored, they are permanent my friend, both physical and mental.
