TUC Document: "The Union Advantage"

We have received a copy of a TUC document "The Union Advantage" which is a new report looking at the positive advantages unions bring to the UK economy and their members. The Union Advantage says that union members not only get higher wages, better sickness and pension benefits; they are also much more likely to be able to take advantage of flexible working and will be able to take more annual leave.

The report cites official statistics showing that unionized workers earn 12.5% more and hour than employees in a non-unionised workplace.

The presence of a union is also likely to result in a training programme that encourages members to take up courses to improve skills. The report goes on to say that more than 230,000 workers were enabled by their union to take up some form of learning last year.

The report shows that because unions give employees a voice and help them solve problems, people are much less likely to leave their jobs in a unionised workplace, saving employers between £72m and £143m in recruitment costs.

By cutting down on accidents at work, unions could be saving employers up to £371m per year, and because they feel involved and listened to, unions greatly help workforces become more productive, benefiting the UK economy to the tune of between £3.4 and £10.2 billion a year.

I hope that the information in this new report will be helpful for activists in dealing with any instances where the real value of what we and our sister unions contribute in hard economic terms to the well-being of the country.

My advice to Billy Hayes would be to stop faffing around with trying to convince us that Liebour REALLY do have our interests at heart, we know they don't, and start acting like the leader of a union whose first and only duty is to it's members.
Spin hasn't worked for Mandelson and Liebour, it won't work for you either, Billy boy, we've got it sussed good and proper.
