I was thinking about this the other day. I think the answer will be a resounding 'YES' and I wouldn't be surprised if those who don't drive at the moment end up being treated like lepers, eventhough their terms of employment have never stipulated that they should be able to.

There seems to be a culture of assuming everyone uses their car on delivery nowadays.

What needs to be remembered is that RM let staff use their cars as a 'favour'. As a personal convenience. The truth is that RM save a hell of a lot of money off the back of that favour and if people stopped using their cars RM would perhaps take a long look at itself and stop treating us with kid (fingerless) gloves. I long for the day when everyone, as one, does exactly that.

Who will cover the driver when he/she is off? RM will want as many people as possible to be able to drive.

My rest day cover drives, so i guess he would cover the driving part, but you will need more cover drivers. mad aint it

Any chance RM will put non drivers who are already employed with them through their driving test?

There can be no way royal mail can make me drive..?
I have never driven a royal mail van , and never want to, I am just asking they can not make me...? if I do not want to drive a van ?
we also have a few people who only passed their test on automatics in my office.

Royal Mail are now recruiting Delivery Postmen and Postwomen who may be required to undertake occasional driving duties.

Hours of work: 25 hours per week 5 days across Monday to Saturday 10.00 am to 15.00 pm.

If you have a full driver’s licence with no more than 6 penalty points and you are able to work to tight deadlines whilst being friendly, professional and customer focused, you are the type of person we’re looking for.

During the last re-sign at our place if a non-driver applied for a driving job Royal Mail had to pay for their driving lessons. They only had a limited time to pass though. Some did, others failed and had to be put on non-driving jobs.

Imagine if they did. I'm sure there'd be a caveat stating that accepting the help to take your driving test would mean you would be obliged to have your job title/description/contract altered to 'Reserve Delivery Driver' or something similar

...and there it is! If that isn't an indication that they're drafting in new folks to 'leapfrog' existing staff members who don't drive, I don't know what is.

I would imagine they will not be able to make you. Simply fail your changeover.

In my office it's been a condition of employment to hold a driving licence for years now, I know that I had to have one whenever I started 7 years ago.
