How should new Full Time contracts be allocated?

Post by GHOSTman »

Due to the savings plan for 2010 / 11 in our office a number of long term full timers are being offered EVR, others are buying down to part time. This has meant a number of part-timers will be made up to permanent full time ( obviously not as many as have left). I know for a fact that my seniority would allow me to get one of these contracts but it is not certain if they will use seniority.

When I asked my DOM how they were going to decide who got the contracts he said "we haven't decided yet, we have to discuss it with the union", He was very evasive, so the next thing I did was go straight to the Area rep, his reply to the question was "It's very complicated as Royal mail no longer recognise seniority" he then waffled on for a bit before walking off.

Am I being lied to here? Surely seniority is the only fair way to allocate new full time contracts?

I need to know how to challenge this as it seems to me that it's going to be the same old "friends and family and A-kissers" who get these contacts. we currently have a number of part-timers who are on temporary full-time contracts. When they were part-time they would come in an hour early for free and work over their time for free.....hmmmm.....I think I've just answered my own question!

Any thoughts?

Are you sure this is going to happen who is going to want to lose there full time job?

chances are they will replace them with part time! why would they want them bought down in the first place?
if jsut to replace them with another full timer.

and yes if theres sons etc there im sure they will get them bcos dad has put a word in for him.The manager will be under pressure to give the family friend the full time job or get alot of greif out of work.. Hence seniority gettin shafted.

Why does your office have a savings plan for 2010/11 when the union and Royal Mail are still in negotiations.

It's not certain to happen. I'm just preparing myself for if it does. We have at least 20 full timers who want to leave or cut their hours. I suppose that tells you something about the company.

I think the Dom is burying his head head in the sand and pretending the talks aren't happening. We had a WTL session the other day where we were told park and loop would be coming by April as part of the savings plan. I don't know if this dom is just a loose cannon or if the union rep is going along with it. The union rep always seems quite resigned to the fact that he is powerless to oppose Royal mail. :arrrghhh

Forgot to mention...if this happens, the people who replace the part-timers who go Full-time will be delivery only so will be on 24hr contracts instead of 30h. Still with me... :arrrghhh It's obvious this plan is a load off B******S and won't work. All i'm interested in is if it's going to be introduced regardless, then at least it should be done fair.

What you describe has been happening at our office for the last 2 to 3 years. So I was very surprised when I saw a copy of their plans (they sent us all a WTL breif) Like you say, i'm not holding my breath, just preparing for if it happens.

To give EVR involves government money to help pay for redundancy. By offering it they are saying this work no longer exists, if they then employ new full time people to do this same work they are in fact breaking Employment Law and likely would be taken to court by the CWU if they have the balls/finance to do this. People will never be made FT again IMHO. Its part time all the way to the end.

2010 business plans have been put on hold until the conclusion of the ongoing talks between the CWU and R/M .

By the sounds of it agreements have been made by local reps here WHY???????

All duties allocated on seniority simples isnt it.

Yes, Seniority applies in all cases .. excepting when it suits RM to do otherwise!

Irrespective of the consequences, P/T is the way forward as far as RM is concerned. I have been fighting a losing battle for ages trying to get P/T's upgraded to F/T, or getting their hours increased where they regularly work more than there contracted hours (currently on 25/30 hr contracts). If you have little or no support from the Office as a whole (stop coming in early, working days off, etc) then P/T contracts will be the order of the day, now and for the future.

It's not redundancy, it's early voluntary retirement. that's why it is offered to the over 60's first.
