Increase in hours?

Hello there,

I'm currently on a 25 h/r contract but was thinking is their any chance I could get it increase to a 40 h/r contract. I do enough overtime every week since I started to make it near or 40 hours but as you all could appreciate; it will not be their forever and do not want to constantly rely on it.

I have been used for cut offs, packets etc...you name it, I'm doing but there is really no major structure in what I'm doing each day.

cant see it im afraid. dont reckon anyone will get anymore contracted hours this year than what they are on now. Think though that if you do the extra hours on a permanent basis and it last for over a year then they have to give you the hours as a permanent contract under some employment law.

Your'e right there you have and are being used. I can't see many full time positions being offered when they are trying to make most part-time besides they will be happy to use you when THEY need you.

There is a lot in my DO that have been on 25 hours for 3 years but been doing over 40 hours since they started.

3.5 years of PT, pro-rata holiday pay, bonus payments, etc, etc......and there doesn't seem to be any hope of it changing anytime soon

It really is a shame all these PTs are unable (unable as in they need to pay bills, I know that) to say NO to overtime and just work their contracted hours - that would shaft RM in one swift blow!

If it was me I would be tempted to find another job that had and paid FT hours, rather than be used and abused by the greedy RM PT rip-off trick to save them yet more money to line the pockets of the filthy pigs that run this shitty outfit! :cfo

Once the modernisation does kick in it'll be 25hrs and that'll be your whack i'm afraid (If you still have a job that is )

It is time that RM was completely honest with P/T staff.
They still promise them at the interview stage that they won't be part-time for long.
The truth is RM will do anything to keep them P/T.
It is only fair if someone wants a full-time job they should be encouraged to look elsewhere.

i wouldn't say all is lost.
Initially you need to formally express a preference to go F/T.
when your office enters its next savings revision the possibility exists for your rep to ask for the most senior P/T who has expressed a preferance to be made up to F/T.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it's easy but it should be at least possible.

i wouldn't count on it! ive been working for royal mail for 6 years on a 35 hour contract and was told at the interview stage that after a month or so id be made up to 40 hours........... im still waiting!!!!!!

In 99% of most cases, no part timer will be made full time while ever they are doing overtime. No need for RM to make you full time, they have you in the palm of their hand and they want to keep you there, who else would do the cut offs!

Nearly 5yrs of 25hrs, and 3 - 4 others who all started after me, have been given from 35 - 40+ hours. So...if your face fits, you're IN!
Wasn't consulted, asked, talked to etc.
