UPDATE ON NATIONAL NEGOTIATIONS

Please find attached a communication from Roger Poole the Independent Chair of the current national negotiations process. In this communication Roger explains that whilst progress is being made the national parties have agreed to extend the process into the New Year.

The extension to the process has been confirmed on the same terms as the original interim agreement.

We will be providing Branches and members with more detailed information early in the New Year.

Progress Report on Negotiations

Intensive negotiations have taken place since my last report. Groups covering Delivery, Processing, Network, RDCs, MDEC, Fleet and Maintenance Services and Engineering have all been meeting to discuss key topics and reach agreements on a complex and wide-ranging set of issues. Talks have also commenced about Reward with useful meetings taking place to negotiate and agree a new employee reward package. A separate group has also been looking at how a final agreement will be deployed.

We have made good progress and many issues are agreed in principle, although there are some important issues still to be agreed. All agreements in principle are of course subject to what the final overall agreement looks like. Acas and I have been helping as necessary and have been encouraged by the constructive approach which both management and the union are taking towards the talks.

At local level, review negotiations continue and good progress has been made with 411 out of 764 now concluded with agreements reached.

The timescale we were set by the interim agreement was always going to be a challenging one. The priority has to be to reach good agreements which stick rather than quick agreements which unravel when implemented so we have allowed ourselves a short extension of the talks into the New Year. We will next meet formally on Tuesday 5 January and redouble our efforts to conclude an agreement by 22 January

Bless their tiny white cotton socks .. shall we tuck our tiredy-wiredy boys in tonight and clothe them in swathes of cotton wool (so that they do not get damaged over christmas) as we would hate for matters to be delayed any longer than necessary!

Can we assume that none of us will need to go back to work until 5th January, or do we not need a well earned rest having given RM the Christmas they so wanted, and in conditions that most people in this country would not even contemplate working in for five or more hours at a time without a break. Oh no, we have to start trudging through the snow again on Tuesday, given 2 days off to restore our tired limbs, while they are given best part of two weeks to heal their sore heads and tongues, and then have to sit for another 17 days sipping hot tea, coffee until they reach another agreement, that will most likely be totally unacceptable to the majority of union members. Sorry for the rant, but it just gets pathetic when you hear a stupid comment, and the protaginist has not made any comment or mention regarding the people that this agreement is supposed to be about. No thanks for the hard work we have put in the last few weeks, and with little information given to us, apart from a few provided by Dingo, who I think must be an alias for Roger Poole.

I wondered who had paid for the Auschwitz sign - rumour had it that it was being hung over the negotiation conference room, the negotiators walking in daily at around 10.30 for tea and wads, sagely nodding their heads to some wag saying "Why don't we have a 10 hour delivery and a 50 hour week" .

Better be a good agreement after 3 months of waiting for an outcome. Hopefully a nice big booklet sent to every member which can be quoted at all rogue managers for years to come. Or perhaps it will be a huge dissapointment and we'll all vote no and threaten a 12 day strike.

and the undelivered xmas parcels about 10-15 yorks in our office( appparently due to the snow that has pulled r/m out of the s**t) but have been pilled up since we had a review
